Pic,

Love reading your blog and now that you are into ham radio, it is even better!

I learned cw on a straight key in the eighties as a 12 year old and even though my dad had a nice bencher iambic paddle, I still liked and used the straight key.

Loved the story!

Ya know, you're in PA, and you like using a QRP radio and it's winter. You should look at the Polar Bear QRP Club!

She was an attractive, polished, competent, professional woman that I figure had a pretty heavy male influence in her life growing up. One of the few women that understand men and are truly comfortable with them

Good thing I'm married or I'd have to look her up and ask her out.

There is always some "Interested Archie" that has to act like a hall monitor. Irritating.

More often they are weak and lack character. They will generally back down from any type of authority figure.
Over the years I have used my Z-card to identify myself and it is surprising how many get apologetic and shuffle off.

I once used a CCW to a jerk like that and he almost shit himself.

Laugh if you will, but years ago when I carried a single fold wallet I kept a (no shit) Junior G-man badge in it. One time I pulled it out and told some jerk I was a member of Melvin Purvis' Junior G-man squad and he got pretty polite pretty fast.

It doesn't take much, but you have to master the bored, condescending look.

ETA: The Junior G-man squad was a come-on from a damned cereal box!

"Are you some kind of governmental agency?" she asked.

"Merchant Marine, Ma'am," I replied. "Conducting a ham radio emergency communications drill."

"No, ma'am. We're musicians." might have worked as well.
