TOTAL AND SUPREME VICTORY! by Bill Kilgore

Hunted Monday, March 22nd at http://www.wildboaroutfitters.com/. Marcus Keith has hog detection superpowers. I drove from DFW and was there by 3pm. Stalked with Marcus. Black Hog Down. I was scheduled to hunt 2 days but since I could not accomplish anything better I was back home in DFW by 10pm. All the places I contacted were booked up into the summer FOR WEEKENDS. If you can schedule WEEKDAYS take it! I was only hunter there on Monday.

Killed 200 lb Russian Trophy Boar with 3" cutters on my first shot on my first hunt ever (and we stalked). Made difficult shot in low light situation in dense hardwood bottomland (photo was 'lightened' by camera) with black scope hairs and black hog. I will start long process of detailing the training and mental prep I did to make my hunt successful from a totally newbie hunter perspective in a very long post to come.

Before you say, 'I was lucky', I was only 'lucky' in a situation that I had no control over (type of hog in range to shoot). All the other things I trained and prepared for such as making stalk shots from various angles, and not having my heart jump out of my chest were not luck but self improvised training and mental preparation.

Quickly, 2 things I am most proud of:
1. My heart did not thump or jump out of my chest as so many hunters have told me it would (and they say they always missed their first shot). In my opinion, that was due to my self training to work on stopping that and a personality type I have. I had 'heighted awareness' and was 'hyper focused' but no thumping heart. Looking back, it was a calm, cold blooded kill shot.
2. I made a heart shot on a walking target with one or maybe two second open lane between trees in dense, hardwood bottomland in lowlight. In a split second, my brain told me to lead the target. It was a reflex. I did not think about it or anything. I just did it. If I did not aim ahead of the hog, the bullet would have landed in the stomach and not the heart and we might not have found him.

Marcus says so many experienced hunters go out and miss their shots. If I did not prepare like I did I would have, too.

Again, very long posting being written. I just wanted to get photos up and feel like a dominant male boar.

Update Fri March 19th - I am going hog hunting Monday 22 and Tuesday 23. Will write up how it goes. I went out and bought a $10 shooting stick at Wal Mart to test on in case I get to go stalking.
Original post below:

Moderators - if this is not the appropriate forum please move. Ar15.com is hugemongous.

Opinions needed for paid hog hunts - will be my first time to hunt ever.

Live in DFW.

I have been preparing by printing, reading and rereading sites like this and www.texasboars.com and all over youtube watching hog hunt vids. too much to type.
From research I have done, paid hunt is best way for someone like me who does not have friends who are baiting the land and no practical experience.
Also, would like a fenced hunt for first time.

Also researching on these sites http://www.texashuntingchat.com http://texashoghunter.com/home.php

Looking at these around Dallas area

What are your opinions on the paid hunts above?

==========================

Primary Weapon of Choice - Romanian PSL (like Dragunov). 30 cal round. 203gr sp. shots look like they are under 100 yds (usually 50). Semi auto w/ 10 round mag. This is the weapon I will take. Will talk to the hunting camp about this before I go.

2nd - 223 Savage Rifle with Accutrigger - would shoot the Winchester 223 'Deer' round that Academy sells. From what I have read, most of the hunt places do not want you to use a 223. This is the only 'hunting rifle' I have. I have been on military surplus weapons. Never thought I would go hunting so I bought something cheap to shoot at the range. After watching the youtube vids of the guys with 223 kill shots I think I could make this work

Sidearm - Ruger gp100 357 magnum with Remingion magnum self defense rounds (forgot exact name)

I appreciate your time in reading all of this.

Couple of buddies of mine and I are in the same boat once we get back from this deployment. It's nice to know people that own some land but otherwise it seems that you've got to pony up the funds

Going to be my first time hog hunting too.

As far as guns I'm either going with a Remington 700 in 308 (most likely choice) otherwise it'll be a plani old 5.56 AR, 7.62x39 AK or a 460 WBY MAG (by far this would be the funnest IMHO)

Have you checked HTR's site? Browsing threw the sites you listed I noticed most if not every one of them allowed one hog then a per pound fee for extra hogs. I can tell you now if you start whacking them your not going to want to stop at one! More than likely all these places will be throwing you up in a blind with a feeder out in front of it waiting for pigs to come out. Nothing wrong with that, but can be boring at times hog hunting.

I hunt very similiar to the way htr hunts, and I can tell you its bad ass! Your on your feet moving all night stalking helmet mounted with NV, then whacking with canned guns. If I was paying to go hog hunting I would be paying to go on a NV/thermal hunt.

First, i would take whatever firearm you feel the most confident with. Despite what you may have heard, your .223 bolt gun will work fine, if you can place the round where it needs to be (head or neck).

Check craigslist, i remember seeing lots of day hunts around the DFW area for 150 bucks, i dont know how legit they are...but you could check into it. Of course the NV hunting sounds/looks badass if you dont mind paying for it.

A little off topic here, but I wouldn't suggest using the 203gr round in your PSL, the rifle is not designed to handled the heavier 54r rounds. The heavier rounds have been known to beat up the receiver as well as the bolt carrier group if used extensively. If you plan on shooting the heavier rounds I would suggest installing an AK buffer.

And a +1 for hightechrancher. I would love to hunt with NVG's.

Langley Ranch is good to go, been there several times. It's the perfect place to take a hog with a handgun.

You *WILL* have a good time hunting with Mr Joe.

you are correct. psl's need 150gr or less. I have tuna cans of 147gr under my bed holding it up. I am not joking.
I beileve that heavy ball will stretch a receiver because the commies would not have gone to all the trouble to paint the tips of 54r as heavy and light ball.

However, I have asked these questions in ak47\romanian forum
1. Does anyone have any photos of a stretched psl receiver?
2. How many rounds does it take to stretch a receiver 500? 1000? 2000? 10000?
3. I installed a heavy duty blackjack bolt buffer. Have not seen any stretching of receiver. I dont know if blackjack buffer stopped but only have WAY under 500 rounds of heavy ball and no problem. Will BJ bolt buffer stop receiver stretching?

Did not receive a response on my questions on forum. I will perform the ultimate sacrifice and see if a small amount of heavy ball stretches receiver. If it does I will put in a second buffer to take up the space (only half joking).

this is the one really close to dallas and it is cheap but not fenced. I believe they have a buncha hogs. I found about about this place last friday at the garland gun range from BIG Kev who said he was going to kill hogs here the next day (saturday). http://www.a-bhunting.com/ This place is closer than the fmj range i drive to in greenville tx.
http://www.a-bhunting.com/price-and-packages

I need didnt see box blinds and I do not think it is fenced but it is soooo close to dallas would be great last minute. can drive home at nite. they run a bunch feeders and big kev was sighting in rifle just for them.
Also, found a couple on craigs list but most from forums and internet searchs.
And yes, I feel very confident w/ 223 w/ 2lb accutrigger and Winchester super x 55gr w/ deer on box. But many places say bring 30 cal or bigger. My psl has 3.5 target trigger but with 203gr sp after shooting for 2 days I feel very confident in it.

I am a very lucky man in that I have been going on 10 day hog hunts yearly on 1800 acres of TX canyon ground and have shot hundreds of hog all for the price of helping out the rancher run some fence on the last day of each years hunt.

I will be a sad man the day that rancher passes.

I need to wait for night thermal hunts at http://www.wildriverranchtexas.com/hunting.html
Need to go hog hunting on a 'normal' hunt to get experienced and stuff before I do the full blown night stalk w/ thermal optics. One step at a time. I try to take baby steps before I run and get all the basics down before I get advanced. If I had the basics down I would be driving down real quick to him. He is a really nice guy and the place looks great!

I get bored easily and sitting in a stand for hours without some trigger time can tire me. Will bring hog reading material and map/compass nav stuff to pass the time while being very quiet and still.

Most guys I know who hunt want to get away from the wife and kids and are ok with staring into a pile of brush for 6 hours and doing nothing just for the peace and quiet. I dont have the wife and kids to run away from. I just have girlfriends and guns (yes, it is a dream life).

I have a friend with about 5000 acres north of Paris, TX, bounded by the Red River. When he's not on the road, he guides hog hunts, and he charges approximately $100 (maybe $150 now) *only* if you actually kill a hog. No hog, then no fee. Let me know if you're interested, and I'll get in touch with him.

Hog Hunting Training Update:

- Built 3 18" high by 30" long cardboard hogs to practice kill shots on. They are in my living room staring at me right now.
- Cut front 1/3 off of cardboard hog showing only shoulder, neck and head area because it would not fit onto targets at range.
- 1 cardboard hog at 50 yards and 1 at 100 yards to shoot at. Went later in day to practice low light shooting. After dark, 50 yard target did not have a range light. Held red spotlight with my left hand on 50 yard target and made headshot with my right hand only w/ 3.5 lb trigger. Dont know how many times I could do this again and I wouldnt try on a hunt but was proud of myself at the range.
- I tested my rechargable spotlight with red lense and it worked out past 100 yards.
- I dont know what I will be shooting off of so I built sandbag and attached to top of camera tripod to shoot without rear support of benchrested sandbags (photos attached).

Notice boar is anatomically correct.
" target="_blank">
" target="_blank">
" target="_blank">

I made a pile of dead cardboard hogs on the range. Confident about real life shots.

apperciate the comment. my suggestions is if you leaving up in dallas there are plenty of hog hunts for reasonably prices. i just googled east texas hog hunts there should be several and they all sound reasonable. the one i liked the most was langley ranch for 150 because you get 1 night stay included, but from when i spoke to them there booked for weekends until i say june.. but they do have regular weekdays hunts that are not filled up. the other choices is craigslists and that is where i got mines at it was a plus cause it was only an hour away.

Update Fri March 19th - I am going hog hunting Monday 22 and Tuesday 23. Will write up how it goes. I went out and bought a $10 shooting stick at Wal Mart to test on in case I get to go stalking.

Photo of 3 cardboard hogs I stalked on Friday. Practiced prone from bipod, using tree as support (worked great) and from shooting stick (which was as hard as I thought it would be. Cardboard hogs were involved in depredation at 50 to 60 yards out (see all the garbage) so I had to make some quick kill shots over and over.

Figured out how to shoot from stick techniques and also how to shoot from one knee with stick. Buncha dead cardboard hogs with kill shots after I was done. Gptta stay on these cardboard hogs or the population can double in 6 months. When I go back in Aug or Sept I might see 6.

When I go hunting tomorrow I know the hogs will be dead if they are made of cardboard.

Nikita Koloff (aka 'The Russian Nightmare') was the big bad professional wrestler from the 80s and 90s.

Each Russian (wrestling Nikita and boar Nikita) were alpha, dominant males in a group of dominant males so the name fits.

he is doing ministry now http://www.nikitakoloff.com/
he changed his legal name to nikita koloff so when he showed his drivers license at airline/hotel/car rental he would be the same guy and would drive around listening to russian speech 8 track tapes. when he ordered at restaurant or checked into hotel he would speak to people in broken english with russian accent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikita_Koloff

Nikita Koloff is home with me and he wanted to say, Hello!

" target="_blank">

=====

Nikita is very proud of his 3" cutters so I thought I would show them better. (I measured them and yes, they are 3 inches)

" target="_blank">

=====

When women come over and see Nikita they are horrified and refer to him as looking like a 'movie monster' and wondering out loud why I would have Nikita on the wall. In one case I had to put a plastic bag over Nikita for the woman to come into the same room (I am not making this up or trying to be funny although it is funny).

For once, I held my tongue and did not say to that woman what I was thinking which was, "Ok, honey, you look like a sow but I have low standards and still want to have sex with you and I do not put that plastic bag on your head"!

=====

All that being said, the reality of the situation is that Nikita does look like a movie monster but I dont want him to hear that so he doesnt develop low self esteem.

I don't think that any amount of training can prevent people from getting excited, I think it's almost all personality type. My hunting buddy still gets excited and shakes every time he shoots something, and that after killing hundreds of somethings. Lots of other guys I hunt with do too.

I on the other hand, don't get overly excited ever, I don't startle at loud noises and I don't jump when people try to scare me. I also make my best shots when under pressure. The few seconds before I shoot it seems like time slows down and everything moves very fluidly. The crosshairs seem like they're stuck to the target and unlike when I'm target shooting or sighting in a rifle, I don't think about breathing, keeping steady, pulling the trigger or anything else, I just do it and all too quickly it's all over.

Congrats on your hog, it's a nice one and welcome to the world of hog hunting!

You are on target. It is a relatively rare personality type that is shown in these situations (especially for a first time hunter). Mental preparation, physical conditioning and 'real life' scenario simulations that I constructed for myself helped out, too.

And everything moves in slow motion for me, too (even though everything is going in high speed before me).

Cabela's Grand Opening in Allen, TX on April 16, 2011.

Brian Quaca {Pigman}, Bill Kilgore {Hunter} and Nikita Koloff {Russian Trophy Boar with 3" Cutters} enjoy an opportunity to take a photo together on a very busy day for Pigman.

Nikita Koloff has a history of anger issues but Pigman's uplifting personality makes even a big, bad, male dominate boar like Nikita smile for the camera.
