IF it works as advertised, IF it comes for android (and is compatible with numerous devices - hate to have to change every 2 years!) and IF the price is as advertised....
Hell yes. |

Watch this and decide.

View Quote I think those are huge ifs! I thought the video was kind of hokey. However, that price tag seems REALLY cheap for IR capabilities. Similar to toys in the kids section at Wal-Mart for $15 that are labeled "night vision goggles". What would be really great is if they came out with a scope/conversion. That is, you hook up your phone wirelessly or with a wire to a scope and it gives you the same visual or with cross-hairs/dot and magnification capability. -Emt1581 |

View Quote I think that's a pretty big leap to make...someone prefers Android over iPhone and it means their life is one big "incredible rainbow of confusion"...? Really?!? I like my S3 and am not fond of the iPhone or any apple product and my life isn't a rainbow of confusion. Now that's just me. But I'd hope this thread wouldn't turn into a GD thread on why one is better than the other. This is about FLIR.... All I'd like to know is when the product will actually be available for sale on the open market. What I'd hate to see is a total Kel-Tec-like release happening. That is...an initial release date. Then a long delay. Then they are released but with glitches. Long lists of people screaming to take their money. Then the price gets inflated due to the limited numbers. And finally it's years before they are actually available, reliable, and at that $350 price point. I know next to nothing about the company, although now I'll be watching, but that's just my concern. If not, and I can buy it on Amazon sometime in the next year (and they make a model for Android)...I'll get one. -Emt1581 |

Google needs to buy up the company, and then release it only on Android.

Please re-read the part above in red. I caught it, Not to derail, but I cut my teeth on Apple. Apple II, IIe, and IIc, and original Mac lc's. I wrote some of my first 'ole skool' BASIC programs on them. I didin't like their closed architecture hardware or software, once I learned enough to realize I knew a little. Hippys, homos, and rainbows are other reasons along with their militant 'Apple cultism'. Android doesn't 'lock me in' to one app store that has to be censored and approved before release. Hell, even my dumb-ass could write an android app and have it on my phone in a minute or three. Apple-not so much. Sorry for the apple-hating rant. Back on track-I still want a FLIR for my droid, and at this pricepoint, it make it a very attractive add-on with a multitude of options for the layman. Redman |

So my question is this. Is this a serious optical device or is it a party conversation piece? Or just a gadget for geeks to jack off with?
Think about the useful (tactical) applications that utilize FLIR. You are looking at targets that tend to be quite some distance away. Does this thing have clarity and focus for targets at distance, or is this a close range device? And if it is a close range device... You're standing there in the dark with your phone emitting light from the screen, that anyone else can see from a half mile away. So... I am coming at this admittedly from the standpoint of tactical applications. I realize that there are other applications as well. This *looks* like an amazing device that could potentially be very useful. But I'd caution anyone who thinks they'll rig some sort of mount to their K-pot or whatever thinking they've got cheap night vision... this might not be it. It's intriguing, but I'll wait until more info becomes available. |

View Quote Turning the brightness on the screen down and holding it from about an arms length away will prevent your face from being illuminated, also keeping it pointed away from your face at an angle helps too. The combat use of thermal on a phone is limited but I see the uses of thermal being more useful in mundane tasks such as seeing where heat is leaking from your house/cabin, spotting critters in the yard or behind bushes etc. Combine the phone Flir with a headset display like a Google Glass type thing and the face glare problem is entirely eliminated. |

This will get hacked into something awesome, then ill buy it.
