Shot this evening in snowy North Idaho

16" 6.8mm about 175-200 yard off hand shot, we went maybe 10 yards

I don't know much about scoring, but a friend said he'd run 190-195

I'm taking him to the Taxidermist tomorrow for scoring and to decide between a European or Cape Mount

Not bad for a broke, soon to be college grad(next saturday)!!!

You definitely WIN.  Good shooting.  Regardless of how broke you think you are, mount that animal.  You will never kill a better one.  If you don't you will regret it!

Must be cold up there or your deer is still on his feet.

Nice - I suggest a nice shoulder mount.  He has nice mass.

Thats definitely a "dandy" buck.  Congratulations!!

As far as score goes, its always hard to score by a pic but thats part of the fun ... I'll take a stab at it.

Inside spread = 21-22"

Basing it off of a typical 10 point rack, you'll lose the split brow tines and there is a deduct for the left G2 and the right G4.  He does look like he has good mass at the bases.

My guess ... 171" net

Make sure you get him scored by an official scorer and post the score here.

Again ... Congrat's

Thanks for the scoring, I had a few people me asking last night for the spread so I took a tape to him and saw anywhere from 21-23.5"

So I lose points for the eye guards being forked like that?

Very nice buck. I am a poor college student as well, except I got one more semester.

I would say that buck would probably score 175- 180.

Very nice!

No matter what he scores, that is an awesome deer. It will probably be pretty tough to find a bigger one.

That is an awesome buck!  Might not ever see another like it.  Have the cape tanned whether or not you plan to mount him now.  You can do it later then withhis skin.  Do a European (clean skull) mount now, saves the dollars and has enormous class.

Holy crap man, I can't believe European mount was even a thought.
Triple brow tines
Get a full cape mount man...who cares what it scores that is one awesome animal.
Huge congrats.

UPDATE:

So I broke down, and decide on the full shoulder mount, every single person I talked to has said to do so.

I took him to the Taxidermist who said it is the biggest whitey he's ever seen, with more mass than any other white tail he's ever seen

Gave me a rough score of 175

Did some looking, I need a minimum of 160 to get into the Idaho record books

Looks like the biggest buck that has been shot in my county (Latah) to date is 173

State record is 186

Looks like i'll be up there with the big boys!!!

Thanks again for all the congrats

Out-freaking-standing!  The smile on your face says it all.  I am not sure if you realizes what you have accomplished but soak it in.  That is a trophy of a lifetime.  Make sure to get it properly documented.

Cheers!

The fact that my name will be in the State of Idaho record books is almost too much for me to grasp right now

Well that sounds great, you'll be happy that you decided to have had the shoulder mount done.

As far as scoring goes, you can have it scored by 2 systems.  B&C (Boone & Crockett) and BTR (Buckmasters Trophy Records)

B&C will require a 60 day drying time under normal conditions; (ex: sitting on the kitchen table for 60 days.)  After the 60 days drying time, you can have it officially scored by a B&C scorer and after that, if it meets the minimum, you can pay a small fee to officially enter the buck into the records book.  Here is a link to B&C so you can "green score" your buck online and get a close idea.  Keep in mind, the rack "could" lose an inch or two over 60 days.

Boone & Crockett

BTR can be scored now.  There is no drying time required for BTR.  All points are eligible for measurement and there are no deductions for abnormal points.  The rack will be given credit for every inch.  The Buckmasters website will show official scorers in your area.

BTR Scorers

Obviously, the Boone & Crockett club is the most prestigious and your buck will reside with many once in a lifetime animals.

Once again, "congratulations" on a dandy buck!

You definitely made the right choice doing the shoulder mount.  Congrats on a great bock.

Now, give us the full specs on the rifle, i.e MFR, bullet used, factory or handload, etc.

I built the rifle myself off of an akpartskits.com parts kit

16" barrel with M4 profile
Its on a Stag lower, RRA 2-stage, YHM spectre length free float, Harris bipod (didn't use it), Bushnell Trophy Series 3x9 Mil Dot reticle

The load that I used was a 110grain Sierra Pro Hunter, with 29.0grains of H322 behind it

I've been getting 1-1.5" groups with that load at 100 yrds so I was pretty confident in it

I know omp1973.

What a jackass.  You take him to spot to hunt and look what he does.  I was going to let him grow one more year.

Just kidding Johnny!  Still waiting to see the horns in person.  Hopefully Monday after you get them back from Paul.

Congrats again

Friggin' Sweet....

So tell us...where did you hit him?  How did that stubbly little bullet with such poor sectional density every manage to drop such a beast?

Did you get an exit wound?  Recover the slug?

That's a pretty rack to look at.  Good call on the shoulder mount.

Bullet entered just left of the spine, and exited just right of it, complete pass though, did not find the bullet, exit would wasn't huge, but the size of a half dollar probably
