guys.  you can take the recoil thing-a-magig off of the crank pulley hicky-ma-jig and wrap any old rope around it and give it a yank, just like in the olden days.
my tiller is set up like this, cuz the rope broke and the cover was held in with weird sized rivets so i never replaced it.

Not all small engines have that ability.

Two weeks ago I ripped the pull cord handle right off my little harbor freight generator. It turned to shrapnel in my hand. It only took a few minutes to change it out, but a 20 min drive to get the handle. A stick would have worked temporarily or a piece of aluminum with a deburred hole in it.

hell man, I used to date a chick that had broken the rope on her "lawnboy" mower a couple of years before and was using a cresent wrench to start it; after the laughing fit I replaced the rope.
