My wife just cleaned out our pantry of nearly 2 large garbage bags full of 1-2 year past expiration date foods.  All this food is still fine I am sure but we need to make room.  I have nearly a years worth at least so we don't need this.  I hate to just throw this away and our local RIFA won't take food after the expiration date.  Are there any organizations you are aware of that will take this before I let the garbage man haul it off?  This is stuff like corn, greenbeens, yams, mixed veggies, etc.  Tomato products I am tossing.

What part of TN?  Heck, I'll take them! I have food in my rotation that is a couple of years past the expiration date and they taste perfect.

Man, look at it this way.  If you sold food for a profit wouldn't you put an expiration date on it too? There is nothing wrong with these foods if the cans integrity is still intact.

One or two years is nothing for otherwise undamaged canned goods.  Like myself, the OP just needs more room.

Correct!!!!!!  I know the food is fine!  Undamaged, unswollen, just past date.  We just seem to accumulate food now that it is just the wife and I here.  Tired of everything falling off the pantry shelves just trying to get to what I actually need LOL

As long as there's no damage to the can, the food is good for years beyond the expiration date.  I just had a can of Hormel Chile that expired two years ago.  It was excellent.

Churches, food banks, etc. usually do not accept canned food past the best buy dates...

I just posted this on my FB page also hoping to get some local input.  I may just have to spend the next few weeks eating this myself to use it up.  I HATE throwing good food in the trash when there are people truely in need   The head of our RIFA goes to our church and they are a no go, even though their demand is the highest it has ever been

Put it under your bed or back of a closet in case shit happens.

Animal shelter WILL take it...

I NEVER toss stuff like that. It goes to the doggies if we dont eat it ourselves. Have never had any problems giving the dags expired food. (or freezerburned food for that matter)

If I had room I would!  We are very well stocked to the point of looking like an episode of hoarders!  And I have a pretty large home.

use it. use the corn to make corn chowder, the green beans and mixed veg to make veg beef soup, use the yams to make a pie, check the tomatoes, they are probably fine as well and can be added to the veg beef soup. make the soup, eat what you want and freeze the rest for dinner another night.

You don't need to get rid of it.
I keep can goods for two years then I start to work it into our regular everyday items that we use.
Just because it's past the exp. date does not indicate it's bad.

I tell ya what, go over to the TN HTF and offer it to anyone there.

If you were here I would take it and give it to a family that we help out.  They would jump up and down for just 2 bags of stuff.

I never give to food banks..... those people go from bank to bank and church to church on Saturdays looking for handouts, so they can afford beer and smokes.  There might be 20% needy people who are not taking advantage.
