Since we are short on cash we are experimenting with our preps such as making our own bread from wheat we ground up which was very good. We now have jumped to making our own butter. Was fairly simple using only heavey whipping creame salt and a gallon mason jar.Was a work out but a success. We netted about a pound of the best tasting butter I ever had. Im not sure how this would work out in a shtf situation unless we had a cow but at least we addded to our knowledge bank.

Recipe

Ingredients:

1 Qt heavey whipping cream
An electric mixer with a whisk attachment or a mason jar
salt

Directions:
Leave cream out of fridge to warm to about 50 degrees
Pour cream into mixer or gallon mason jar
mix on med/high speed for around 5-7 minutes or until butter seperates from liquid (Butter Milk) and clumps on whisk
if using mason jar instead of mixer just shake the heck out of it till ya get the same results
remove the butter from the bowl or jar and rinse thoroughly with cold water till it runs clear and then salt to taste ( We used 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt)
you can freeze the butter if desired for later use or place in a butter bell on the table or save in the fridge

Good job with a new skill.  We have some friends who have a dairy cow, and sell milk, butter, buttermilk, cream, etc.  The butter making process is pretty time consuming from what I understand, and is not very cost effective if butter is available to buy from the store.

I realize that knowing how, and being able to do it yourself may be adequate satisfaction in itself, but I'm not sure it is a good way to save money.

After watching our friends having to milk the cow every day (?I am not sure if it is once or twice) I have come to appreciate how easy our lives are these days.  They are absolutely tied to that cow, and can't leave home for 24 hours.

EDITED after reading the OP more closely.

We actually saved about a dollar per pound this way over the pirce of buying real butter here in the stores. Also the whole process only took about 10 mins. The beauty here is ya can flavor the butter with what ever ya like. I would think that actually owning and caring for a cow would add to the process but buying heavy whipping cream at the store will have to work for now.

Honey butter on home made fresh milled whole wheat bread is one of my favorites, (although it always gives me heartburn afterward).

Cows need to be milked twice a day.  If you have a calf feeding from the cow this varies.

Neighbor has some horses and cows and yeah they have to hang around the place.

Last place they lived someone came around and did the milking on the weekend for her and that person did it for the milk so the person got lots of free milk and the neighbor had a weekend of no milking to mess with.

And the raw cow milk will seperate and vary as to what exactly it is.  Different cows have different amounts of output as well and output can vary with diet.

I work too much to even want a goldfish but I could see someone who lived in the country on some land and hated to travel where they might do rather well with some animals.

Thanks for the info! Now I've got at least an understanding of how it's done.

We did this with the kids a few times - it was fun for them and made some good butter.  We used the cream and mason jar.  They each took turns shaking it gently back and forth and watching the butter form.
