We us the 300 oz (2.34 gal) laundry soap containers.

When they are empty I fill them with tap water and store them.  There is always a little soap left inside so I figure this water would be good during SHTF for bathing at least (even has a handy spigot on it!)

Is this a good way to store water?  Could the water be potable if it was boiled?

Good way to store non potable water. The chemicals from the detergent leaches into the plastic so it will never be of any use for potable water.
On a side note I think that over time the plastic will start to break down and the bottles will leak.

Boiling won't remove the chemicals already in the water.

You would have to find a way to remove the disolved chemicals.

I keep those on hand as well for flushing toilets ... I suppose you could also use for bathing, washing clothes, maybe even dishes.  I have been storing these for about 8 months now so far without any leaks...   I have them out in my garage so if they would leak... shouldnt be too bad.  They seem pretty tuff tho.. we'll see.

These are useful, just not for drinking.

They would be great for washing/sanitation/cleaning/etc. Many of these things are ignored as a whole in most preps.

For me, It would be a space issue. Since my storage is limited, I would rather have multiuse (potable) water stored than non-potable.

If space isnt an issue and you ahve the containers....  Store away, I say!

Like everyone said, don't drink it. I think they will hold up for years if kept in the dark, I've seen them bounce 2 feet when full.

I have 4 of them filled up for washing or toilet flushing.  The ones I am using have the spigot on the side.  They will sit nicely over the edge of the sink and you can dispense a controlled amount of water in the sink as needed.  I did not rinse them out prior to filling which means the water is soapy enough for mild washing duties.

They are pretty strong and the easy to carry also.

I would not drink from them, but if needed you could use the water in a solar still to get some drinking water.

Yep, thats what I figure, bathing washing hands, cleaning important items, etc. Basically anthing that needs clean water and is not for direct food use.  I do the same with plastic bleach bottles as well.

Yep. I use them for a hand wash station for camping or the range. The orange thing in this pic.
