I bought the below recharegable LED lamp for power outages and for $35, it is a great deal since it comes with both AC and DC chargers.

ETA: Wow, only a 2 hour run time on that? I bought one of these a little over a year ago and still running on the same set of d cells. YMMV. Just something to think about.

I have the cheap LED lantern from Chi-Mart $ 5.00 and AA batts. Work good for me and can stock many because there are cheap.

There was a write up on the energizer one over on candlepower forum some time ago.

Turns out it did very good

We have several options as well but one of the lights I like a whole lot is these:

http://www.conservationmart.com/p-235-sylvania-power-failure-light-72032.aspx

Note that my Brother and his family went through a home invasion and one of the things the criminals did was got access to the breakers and killed both the phone and electricity.  Consider fighting in your home with no phone and absolute darkness!  So, I bought at least half a dozen of these little lights and I have them in key locations in the house so that if the power was out we can see or even pull one of these out of the wall and use it as a flashlight BUT if it were a home invasion and they managed to cut the power I have light in my kill zones to identify a person moving and to allow me to shoot before they can see me!

We have a few other lights including one of those hand crank lights that run off AA batteries or you can crank it to generate power.  We have a few AA powered LED lanterns, and of course we have our oil lamps and kerosene lanterns and candles but those little lights at the top could be life savers and I absolutely would never want to be without them!

I have one of these, and it works well. BUT, it's on all the time, or off. A bit bright to use as a nightlight, but great as a power failure light. I wish you could set it to only come on during a power failure, as that's what I was looking for when I bought it. The search continues...

whats the auto button for?

The three settings on these are as follow:

Off - Nothing is on when plugged in (with or without power) or unplugged
Auto - Works as a nightlight until power goes off, then it switches to the flashlight mode
On - Turns the flashlight on and night light off regardless if plugged in or not

As for the comment that they are bight, yes they are bright but we don't use them in the bedroom.  We use them in the hallways, downstairs, in the garage, and in the basement.  There is also one at the top of the stairs and one near the bottom of the stairs which combined do light up the stairs from the main floor to the second floor quite well but I prefer that after seeing what can happen first hand.

I picked up one based on the writeup.  Someone here also did a test on it, and it lasted at least 245 hours.

I went with the Uber-cheap option and got a set of 10 solar landscape lights for $20.  They last for 8 hours however I dont know how well they will work a couple years down the road.

They are cheap enough, just buy more and leave them in the box unused or plan to replace or add new ones ever couple years.  We have about a dozen of the $5 ones from Wal-Mart and they do work well to light up the yard and make a good source for emergency charging of AA batteries.  If the lamp fails, I will try to save the solar components as a dedicated battery charger but none have failed us yet in about 2-years of having them going.  I have replaced the rechargable AA batteries however when they don't hold a charge anymore.

There also good for lighting the house in an outage.  Pull them from the lawn and bring them in the house.  Gives enough light to get by.

I have 5 of these... they are bright as hell and will light up a room. they also have a hook on the bottom and the lantern hood can be removed, the  base can be hung upside down and its basically a bright  bulb from above.

pretty sweet.

It's not fancy, but this is what I've got. I've found in most power failures, there's nothing to do but grab a light and a good book.

I was actually going to get one of the new Coleman LED lanterns, but the rechargeable battery pack has been hard to find and all in, this set-up is $75-$100.  This $35 unit will suffice for now, but we also have 3 or 4 smaall hand-held LED lights that do double duty as night lights for the kids and flashlights for emergencies.

+100 I have one in almost every room of my house including the garage and shed. Very bright. They're comforting to young ones when the power is out and it's SUPER dark and VERY quiet.
