Good luck! When you don't want to work out, GET OFF YER ASS AND DO IT ANYWAY!!! The Zombies won't wait!!!
Seriously though, good on you for making changes. I'm in the same boat... sort of. I don't weigh a smuch, but, if I keep eating like I was, then I would be... so I'm cutting back on the amount of food I'm sucking down my gullet... for the last week or so it's been chicken breast for dinner and lunch and as much salad as I can tolerate... and I'm trying to shrink that down too. I'm tired of eating so much food as I was before. |

good luck man.
im down 50+ lbs since july 11'. now im laid up with a blown out back so much for being in shape and thank you work |

You could be my twin, except I haven't started a workout regimen yet. I quit smoking by using Chantix just over 7 months ago. Good luck.!

Way to go! I'm right there with ya. I'm 5'9" and weighed 220 at my last doctor visit. (245 was my all time high.) Shooting for below 180 by the end of the year. My wife and I have been walking a mile a day for the past 2 weeks and I can feel the difference already. Just got some dumbells in and will be using those 3 times a week as well.
Have you made changes to your diet as well? That's the sticking point for me. I love to eat and my wife is a dang good cook. We've cut out fried foods for the most part. We're eating more chicken and vegetables, less carbs. Heck, just cutting out my coke-a-day habit should help me lose a pound or two. |
|
An app for my phone that has helped me drop about 15 pounds is called MyFitnessPal.
It's basically just a calorie counter. You enter your current weight, and your weight loss goals, and your desired weight. It calculates an ideal calorie amount per day. As you eat, you enter the food in. The app has an extensive database, so if you eat at Olive Garden, it knows how many calories are in the Chicken Marsala. You can also scan barcodes and enter food that way. You also enter your exercise for the day. Run 3 miles in 24 minutes, add 400 calories ( or whatever it is) to your total of the day. As long as you stay under the calorie limit for the day, you'll lose weight. Good luck.

Bravo!
I'm going to try the MyFitnessapp myself. I'm 6'4" 275 and big boned :) Now remember. having a little fat on you is good for a SHTF situation! |

I hope just walking works for you it does for some people. It wouldnt for me before i hurt my knee on the last hike we did. I was walking 2~ 6 miles a night with a 45lb pack. I lost a few pounds but then it just stopped. Like i said eating less than half my normal amount. No sugar.... low fat. I know i should be counting calories and some kind of "diet" but when i try to read that stuff it rattles in my head. Meh good luck with the coke thing............ I used to drink 1case yes 24 regular cokes a day........... Halffast convinced me to go diet ... My mom swore i would drop weight like mad. I never lost a freaking pound. I've cut the diet cokes back to about 8 a day and a pot of coffe (not having my carmel white choclate creamer and 4 tablespoons of sugar is extremely tough) My "cheat" day is sunday and i'm about to enjoy the hell out of the creamer ..... Halffast told me i needed to quit the sugar completely so i'm done unless it's in something i don't know about. eta coffe n hand I'm going to they gym |

first of all, congrats on taking the steps. I love you, man, and am glad you'll be healthier and here longer.
now, I'm gonna second the Primal thing... marksdailyapple.com - lots of recipe ideas, what to eat and not eat... food (especially for me) is 90% of the battle... you've got a lot of folks who care, so ask the questions, vent the frustrations, and just take each day as it comes... (ps... I guess my birthday present was a last hoorah? nothing like a big bottle of calories... LOL... sorry about that...) |

Good luck acman. About 4 yrs ago my son was right where you are now, he was 26 and weighed 265 lbs was your height and smoked. He stopped smoking lost the weight very slow got his but in shape. He has always been a broad shoulder person and will never be skinny. He now weighs between 195 and 200 lbs looks great and feels great. Just take it slow when taking the weight off, ask yourself this question, how long did it take to get this way? You want to do this the correct way and not have to do this again.

I'm 43, 5'11, and at a doctor's appointment 2 weeks ago I weighed in at 280. That was it! I'd had a Planet Fitness membership since right after Xmas but had only been a couple times. Well, I've been going for a couple hours every day, hitting the weights for an hour and then doing an hour on the elliptical. I already feel better, and along with my change of diet (minimal processed or added sugars, a lot more protein and fiber, more fruits & veggies, less fat) I've lost 8lb in the past 2 weeks. I can't go today because all my sweats are FUNKY and I can't do laundry till later, but I'll just do some extra tomorrow.
The biggest issue for me is eating healthy is EXPENSIVE compared to eating stuff that's not very good for you. Reading all the labels on food is a pain in the ass as well, but the good thing is that once you find foods with the best nutrition content and least sodium, trans fats, sugar, etc, you can just stick with that. There's always buying ingredients and making stuff yourself instead of buying prepared foods. |
|
Well, that's not exactly a long term thing. Accepting the free gift of salvation through Christ is 'long term', but I digress.
Good luck! Fitness is FAR more important than bug-out bags, BOVs, MREs etc. |

hell man you've seen what a fat fucking slob I am, turned 42 last summer;
the summer of 01' I weight 265lb, bench pressed 355lbs and could hunt/walk/work a hard physical job all day, day in day out and play hard every bit of free time I had. then I had a oji in nov 01', surgery in jan 02' and didn't work again until dec 04'; spent that whole time sitting around watching tv and eating fast food, chips, cookies and snacks everyday like mad I put on nearly 150lbs. since going back to work I've been up and down weight wise, I'd loose 50lbs put back on 60lbs eating like a hog; smoking two+ packs a day, drinking cup after cup of free coke, coffee, sweet tea etc etc. last year I cut back on the smokes to less than a pack a day, cut back on the cokes/sweet tea to one a day (this is damn tough), still drinking at least a pot of coffee a day though, damn it's the toughest, I drink coffee when I get up, when I get to work and when I get off work and again after dinner. in nov of last year I decided to cut back on the groceries too, quit eating most fast/junk food(still eat pizza a couple times a month) and bread; every day since nov I have a small salad and 6oz of either beef or chicken. don't know exactly how much I've lost, but my pants are fitting a bit looser, I've had to tighten my belt by two notches, need to start back hitting the gym, at the very least walking a couple miles a day to start; hell right now if I had to go back to doing physical laborious job 8+hours a day I'd either struggle like mad to make it everyday or stroke out right away. had several full physical/blood/UA lab work recently; the doc says I'm borderline diabetic and high bp (bp was 128/80 last visit but has been as high as 146/94); got high cholesterol and all the other bullshit that goes with it; the doc says besides being an extremely fat motherfucker I hadn't hit the point of no return yet, but I'd better get my fat ass in gear and start making changes or I'm going to start having some serious fucking health issues pdq. |

Dammit AC, now I am gonna have to do the same thing. The kid went from near 270 to about 22o, running 4 miles a day and lifting. It'll be a while before I catch up to that.. I'm 5'8" and 220, should be 175 or so.
Good luck with it bro, a little less food and a bit more exercise will do it. Maybe we should have a contest. biggest loser wins.. Ops |

I cut out soda, candy, and eat nomore than 2000 calories a day, sometimes less than 1800.
I run two miles a day, 20-30 situps, and 30 pushups. I am going to start jump rope. It doesn't take long to get results. |

ac what worked for me was this.
eat less, drop the junk. by this i mean , no fast food, no processed crap or junk. maybe no more beer( killer for me) I also swapped in filler foods ( protien shakes with low carbs/low sugars) yogurts, vitamins, and snacked alot. I ran 2+ miles each day plus 15 mins of cardio work before work. ( injury now so i cant) but i lost 15+ lbs the 1st two weeks and 1-3 lbs per week after that. most going from fat to muscle. Now that im hurt it went the other way. i burned off muscle and fat and sit around 223-224lbs now(at 5'10). i went down 4+ belt notches and 2 shirt sizes....in other words from an XL bdu to a large..i can wear medium poly pro bottoms and a large top.....my work uniforms went from a 42 to a 38 with room lots to move.....ive donated off a ton of clothing. what i found is after a month or more or "de toxing" the crap out of yourself ( carbs, sugars etc) you can add some back lil at a time and have it not effect you. beer is an instant weight gain for me. i had my 1st doughnut and coffee in 9 months the other day..me and the wife thought my eyes were gonna buldge out and i go into a sugar comma |

Way to go, guys!
I'm glad this is catching on. I've seen several threads on here and FS concerning people making improving their health a high priority. +1 on the myfitnesspal. It is free. You can use the website, but the smartphone app is great. I've recorded my food intake for 165 days straight and have lost about 60 pounds since starting the app. MFP is just an excellent calorie tracker with online search capability. It is similar to the weight watcher point system. It allots you a given amount of calories every day to eat as you see fit. You just have to budget your food intake. If you like a big supper, you can eat a big supper, but you'd better be careful earlier in the day. My only recommendation is go online and change the ratios to a higher protein diet. If anyone wants a MFP "friend", send me an IM. Maybe enough of us could start a group of some sort. I'm running now and this is a first in my life. This time last year I couldn't run half a mile without stopping. Yesterday, I completed a local 5K in 30:06. I also just recently started a lifting program. I've got a long way to go, but I've got nothing but time........... |
|
Good luck, man. I hate workouts with a passion. I hate going to the gym, I hate being at the gym, I hate doing stuff at the gym...but a half hour oafter the workout, when Im home and showered, I am *so* glad I went. It really will pay off. It doesnt matter what you do...CrossFit, PX90, running, ruck march, whatever....just do something and have the discipline to keep doing it.

Acman, 1000 calories a day is not enough for a big guy. Your body will consume your lean body mass to fuel the fires. My guess is you probably need to be eating 1800-200 calories per day. I weigh 210 and lose around 2 lbs per week on about 2100 calories per day.
One of the things that has been different for me this time is I consider this a change of lifestyle. In the past I have always crashed dieted. I could lose weight rapidly, but after a few weeks I'd go crazy and get off my diet. Then, I'd resume my old eating habits and regain the weight the following year. By taking the slow route, I'd had to change my bad habits and pick up good ones that will help me keep the weight off for the rest of my life. I do indeed view food a bit differently than before. Yes, it takes a long time, but we have plenty of it. Shoot for a diet you can live with the rest of your life if you have to. That's the one that you will stick with. |
|
Good job!! Keep it up...I am doing the same thing... I have really let go the past couple of years and ended up 6ft 308pds..Never smoked and rarely drink. .Nobody ever guesses I am as heavy as I am, I guess I carry it well. But I am sick of being this big.
Started Jan 1st trying to limit my calorie intake like I did a few years ago. It works but am always hungry and thinking about food. That lasted 2 weeks or so.... Then I started watching my Carb intake,,,not quite atkins but almost,,for 6 days a week.(Saturdays usally a pizza night) Then 2 weeks ago I started at Planet Fitness after my wife joined and dragged me a couple of times. I have been going 4-5 times a week and kind of enjoy it. I don't kill myself,, I just jog or walk fast for 30mins or so. Then I do something else for 15-20 mins. Shower and go to work. I seem to enjoy it for the most part,(except my calfs kill me) and I am down 18 pounds so far and am losing it slower then in the past which I think may be good since I feel its more a life change then just a diet. |
|
I recently realized I was a member of the fatfucker club. 5'10", about 220. I put on about 40 lbs in the past two years, and none of my clothes fit anymore. Time for a change. Reading this is encouraging...

Hey AC, I am in the same boat, 5' 8" and 225 lbs, and I will be 44 this summer.
I started at the first of the year, and I suck......I need to get serious, and get some weight off, and get in better shape. Good Luck Buddy !!!!! |

I am around, I just don't post much
Good to talk to you too, stay at it, it is important !!! Bandit |

Good for you, man. 3 years ago I was up to 220 pounds of fat. I'm at 190 now and stronger than when I was 18 (I'm 36). Go kick some ass. Being in shape is a great feeling. I'm not an animal by any means but I feel great. Not only do I feel better physically but I'm sharper mentally too.
Just eat a sensible diet. Eat fatty and high carb foods in moderation, eat smaller portions, and get lots of exercise. You don't need a fad diet, just dedication. |

I cut my suposed to be 4 day weekend of riding motorcycles short.
I couldn't get my head in the game and almost drove off the road 3 times figured i better quit before i was dead or worse. 1000 calories a day isn't enough. 1500-1800 would be minimum.
Go Primal/Paleo like others have said. The basics are to eat meats, vegetables and fats. Do not eat any grains or refined sugars. Read the self-defense/fitness forum here to get ideas. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/ http://www.robbwolf.com/ Quoted:

Nuts and nut butters are calorie dense foods. I store a lot of peanut butter. Also, some healthy fat like olive oil can be added to many dishes.
To avoid muscle wasting you need a certain amount of calories and you need a lot of protein. Many in the fitness commmunity advocate at least 1 g per pound of bodyweight per day. That much might not be necessary, but your meals probably should be centered around a big piece of meat. Since you are having trouble eating enough, some added fat wouldn't be a bad thing. I, on the othe hand try to eat too many calories every day. So I supplement with liquid protein. It's a calorie efficient way to get what my body needs. |

I didn't loose a pound.... and haven't eaten anything. |

Bro if you stop eating altogether, you body thinks you are starving and goes into conservation mode. I think your semi state of confusion has to to with low blood sugar due to not eating, and man not sleeping will drive you fucking nuts.
Dude if yo are having probs let me know, I can be there in about 36 hours or so, less it the kid comes along to help drive. Hang in, bro, hang in. Lay down in the afternoons when you get home from work, rest a while, then see if you feel like eating. Ops |

Scales said 225 this am...... lightest i've been in over 10 yrs.
Bought some protien shake stuff yesterday and started it to help with calories and protien. Everything i read says i need a lot more protein than i've been taking in. I've been alternating between free weights(starting strength) and the primal workout trying to decide what's better for my goals .......... While my diet certainly sucks and i'm not doing things the ideal way. It's nice to see some pounds drop and inches go away. I'm actually really critical of my gut and i can see a difference. The bike is doing wonders on my legs too. While certainly not "defined" they are getting solid a lot faster than i would have thought. Stilll a long way to go but nice to see something going the direction i want. |
|
I did the primal thing over the summer. No more than 50g carbs per day, pretty much ate whatever else I wanted. I probably ate less than 1000cal per day. I only had some minor symptoms of fatigue. Weight fell off of me, and I had already cut out sodas and candy, it was just plain overeating without thinking. Lost around 35lbs in my two month summer class.
It's very doable. I started it back up, but I have night cravings BAD. To solve them, I eat peanut butter and protein powder, then I alternate the exercises you can find at 7weekstofitness.com. I used to be an ordnanceman, loading JDAMs, and I feel better now then I did at 21 lifting missiles. I'm slacking though, I could train harder to lose the spare tire. Just understand the fast early weight loss is more than likely water. Keep going for real results, and watch your body fat percentage shrink, not your overall weight. YES, it takes a while, and I feel diet is the single most important factor. |

Stilll a long way to go but nice to see something going the direction i want. well, hot damn, that is good news. Keep at it bro. Ops |

Glad to hear things are moving along. To get a few hundred more calories in you you could mix your protein drink with whole milk. It will benefit your muscle building program also.
You mentioned the starting strength program. I have the book and video. They are quite good. A very similar program is called stronglifts 5x5, You can google it. I've had to substitute certain exercises because of some back issues. I've never liked weight training. But I'm seeing some gains in muscle mass, and that's helping me stay motivated. Another thing I will mention to all older guys is to have your testosterone levels checked. I started t therapy a few weeks and can already tell a big difference in my energy levels and productivity. |

Looked at the stronglifts program. Seems to be pretty similar to starting strength. I need to get a trainer i guess to coach me on proper technique for a bit. I'm a little paranoid about not lifting heavy weights correctly causing injuries. I hurt my knee last year or so during a hike and it took forever to heal it seemed like i don't want to do that again. If i could just sleep now i think it would make all this go smoother lol. |
