the battle bridge was not available for a tour ................. J/K

My primary interest was the radio room and they do in fact have a radio room, port side, behind the window in the wall (see pic) but I didn't get to go in despite asking directly.

He showed me the leftmost corner of the second row of equipment (see pics)

Of course you didn't get inside the radio room...they are all in there operating the CQ WPX contest.
Nice pic of the radio though..now I know where to listen for them.

I had a meeting with Carnival in Miami one time , and I got the impression that they almost never use HF other then whats required under GMDSS.  They have multiple itteration of satcoms and if they want to talk to some one they call them on the phone.  At one time, the engineers/hotel maintainance, may have used it to get parts in ports of call, but thats all phone calls now.  If Carnival wants to talk to a ship on HF, they have to go through a common carrrier like WLO- There are no official HF facilities at their offices.  It was implied there might be some ham antennas on the roof.

Thanks for the pics Dan

My wife and daughter have been dogging me to take them on a cruise. While it's not my ideal way of spending a vacation, if I could tour the bridge and/or the inner workings of the ship it might not be so bad after all. We've done plenty of short 1-3 day cruises, but never a weeklong plus cruise...

Doubt you will see the engine room- they are way to concerned with security and libility.  I've gotten to see the engine rooms on a couple of 300-600 ft ships and it's pretty impressive.  IIRC, I need a TWIC card just to do that.

I'd do the windjammer sailing cruses, or maybe a transit on the Panama Canal, but thats all that interests me.  But if you like Casinos, and lots of cheap food, and getting dumped on a remote island with 2000 other people for a few hours, it might be fun.

Thanks for the info CB

Back a couple of decades ago when I was single I did a WindJammer barefoot cruise, and that was a lot of fun. Did an Outward Bound sailing tour as a teen, and that was a lot of fun too-albeit a lot of hard work. Even though I've only owned power boats I do enjoy sailing.
