I have an extra pelican 1060 case sitting here that could be used for something other then holding air.

I got to thinking that a great way to show off ham radio to my friends would be to build/modify a QRP rig to fit into this case. Now i know that it would be easy enough to do with a CW rig but I want to try a SSB voice rig.

I would like to be able to fit the mic, antenna, i doubt the battery but maybe into this case. Is it do able? With radios like the ft817 being all mode all band I would hope that this would work.

what do you think?

You might try something like this:  BitX

In a sealed case like that whatever is inside may cook itself though.

i would expect to run it with the lid open for air flow. just a nice protective case for when its in travel mode

In that case, build that radio and drop it in whatever case it fits in.

I have been looking at some single band SSB/CW QRP rigs for a while now, I think I am going to go with one of those rigs after looking at them.

I like the fact of putting it together, plus the reviews are very good. The price range is right where I would like it to be, plus it would make a cool little project to home brew a solid state HF amp for one.

I think a pelican 1200, small QRP manual tuner, some wire, and a 7ah SLA battery would make a nice little QRP go kit!

I think 20 meter will fit the bill

Oh and it is Harrystone's fault now!

You might be able to cut the antenna to negate the need for a tuner.  It might be 3:1 on some frequencies, but with QRP it wouldn't be too bad.

I was thinking of that, and I have this Crappie Pole antenna done for 20 meter also.

I will hopefully order the kit in the next couple of weeks and see how it works, I am not going to worry about a tuner for now, I can operate without one.
