I want to get into this but lack any knowledge. "HAM for dummies" anyone?

What kind of rig do you recommend for traveling on foot? Kit me out for $250.00 - $350.00.

Thanks in advance, your expertise is appreciated.

It may be long, but trust me it is well worth the read.

Actually, as a new ham, I'd recommend ar-jedi's thread.
Less random conversation than the "everything you ever wanted to know thread" more facts, and answers to noob questions.
arjedi's 2 page thread helped me much more than 54 pages or random thoughts by people about ham that does not follow any sort of track.
