Undisclosed locations.

If you want to try a QSO give me a shout. I am running guerilla portable tonight but will have ARFCOM access.

I am running and will set up a hipshot on a moment's notice from wherever.

I will QSL any ARFCOMMER I contact.

Pic, out

Got booted out of here.

Throwing a wire over a light pole of a Starbucks wasn't such a good idea. I almost had themm bullshitted with my seaman's papers but They said they were calling the police.

Some Masshole flunk-out (a guy that flunked out of Mass Maritime) ratted me out.

We were out of there in one minute flat, and for an added bonus my assistant got him pretty good in the ass with the infamous slingshot.

Headed north to a safe place a bit north.

Back on the air in 10 minutes.
Link Posted: 11/21/2012 11:17:20 AM EST
working from home, which means the radio is right in front of me.
Link Posted: 11/21/2012 11:21:34 AM EST
Check in on the YLISSB. 14.332.

When they ask you for any calls tell them you want the guy running guerilla portable.

Be up and running in about one minute.

This time from a safe haven.

I hear a VE3 babbling. Don't currently hear net control, as soon as they swing around, i'll give a holler.

Cool.

He's in MN (too close) and the other one is somewhere else.

Will monitor 14.332 for a few minutes. Piccolo, can you do CW?
Link Posted: 11/21/2012 11:56:51 AM EST
got sidetracked. My wife heard a gunshot, and yelled for my rear end ASAP.

turns out, an exploding aquarium sounds a lot like a gunshot.

No comeback for my CQ.

Ouch! sounds like a mess to clean up and a few thrown penalty markers.

Up and running on YLISSB.

Still in safe haven but I am thinking very seriously of going back out of the safety of where I am to full blown ops.

If the Miles Standish monument was still open 24/7 I would climb it and throw a wire ofer the side.

I might set up in a mall soon, though.

Yeah. Not bad for a wire in a tree.

Piccolo, you were 59 down here. Your portable is working well.
Link Posted: 11/21/2012 12:26:55 PM EST
DerFAL, I believe you were the guy I talked to. My call was W3*** from SC
Link Posted: 11/21/2012 12:27:19 PM EST
Hey, if anybody tries for me on the YLISSB in the next few, ask Nancy to forward. SHe's a 5x9 and I can hear her several feet away on the handset.

I am helpping out in the kitchen of my safe house.
Link Posted: 11/21/2012 12:30:51 PM EST
Yup, that was me.

Damn good for a wire in a tree! What's your mobile rig? I'm on an FT-950.

Leaving the safe house for a mall.

We got a pretty good team now. Three of us.

The advance party of one goes ahead and sets up a new antenna somewhere and calls me on the cell when it is up and then when I arrive, he moves onto another place.

I set up and run a bit until I get another call which isn't too damed long. The kid is good. We scored a 500 foot roll of 14 gauge ad cut three antennas.

One at the safe house and 2 of them we are running with.

Piccolo,
Got your QSL with the picture of your portable radio. Last time you were operating from Bumfuck, Egypt.
Link Posted: 11/21/2012 12:48:23 PM EST
I'm new and full of ignorance.

What is this guerilla radio activity you speak of? Do you just run around from unsecure location to another making as many contacts as possible?

Sneak, stealth, con game, whatever it takes. Set it up in an unlikely spot, go on the air.

Set up ANYWHERE, make a few QSOs, break down and run like hell to the next spot. before the artillery get the spot.

As I post this I am setting up in a nearby mall with a wire tossed over a light pole. I have given my advance party the other wire and he's hunting for another spot already.

One more and we're headed back to the safe house as it is getting cold.

ETA We got booted out of a Starbucks a while ago.

Guerila radio goes back to the way they trained usin the army.

Part of my duties included spotting for the big guns.

We were trained to call for fire, adjust and get the hell out of the area MOST riki-tik becore we could be located.

I got pretty good at that.

ETA The running part, anyway.
Link Posted: 11/21/2012 1:14:31 PM EST
It's getting chilly.

Back to the safe house.

Be back and up soon.

@0 is going up so I guess I'll find a home somewhere on 40.

Do you have a backup plan for bail just in case the E&E/BS doesn't work out for you?

Sounds like fun. Most of my portable ops is more of the "In Law Avoidance" variety. When we go visit, I take my radio and hole up in the pump house for as much of the weekend as I can get away with.

Adding this to the list of things I need to do when I get licensed. Thank you, kind Sir.

The worst part is that every once in a while some nosy self appointed sheriff comes by and demands to know what is going on. The curious, especially the ones with little kids are welcome but the self-appointed sheriffs generally get run off. My favorite one was the one that DEMANDING to know what I was doing.

"First of all,it's Colonel. I was retired seven years ago but the bastards put me on active duty again for two weeks. I USED to have to make sure my NCOs were not too rough on people but that's not my responsibility anymore. Go away or I will have you escorted away. That man over there is Sergeant Patowski. It smarts when you get escorted by him because he dropped out of Sunday School in the third grade and doesn't know any better."

"Yeah, well..."

"Sergeant Patowski! Help the man find his car and this time allow him to use his keys to open the door if it is locked. This time please do NOT run your fist through the window and unlock if from the inside."

Of course, he took off. I can get away with this to a certain degree because I am 61, not too fat and have a short haircut and know how to pull this off.

This sounds odd, but if the police roll up on you they are actually your friend. All you have to do is explain you are an amateur radio operator and are conducting an Ecomm drill. Cops generally know hams run a lot of Ecomm stuff and are actually supporters. No need to try and BS them. The problem with cops is generally they want to know how stuff works (meaning they are no problem)

Maybe it's your uniform and the "hard hat" that gets people confused? Do you carry your rifle while doing EmCom drills at a mall parking lot?

No weapons are exposed. WHile the average idiot will walk past a radio and say nothing, any type of weapon will draw the US Cavalry like a wagon train in distress.

Incidentally, my uniform for this is basic jeans and a shirt of some kind that looks mainstream, although I have worn a set of khakis with success.

Happy Thanksgiving. The turkey just went into the oven and we had eggnog while we prepared it. Now we can relax and have a beer or thirty while it cooks.

I've tried about two dozen times. I think this is one of those times when I just don't have enough power. Like at night, when I can hear Roberto calling from Italy. I can hear him, but he can never hear me.
