Curious what you think of it as camping/power outage/bug out item as a quick way to get hot water with a minimum of fuss.

That looks like a solid piece of gear.  When I was researching these pots, I was looking at the Kelly Kettle.  My search also found the Thermette Kettle, which is what we ended up getting.  The only advantage to Thermette is that it is all copper.

I don't remember exactly what drove that decision, but it had to do with copper being safer to cook on/in for extended use.  Either way, the Thermette really draws a nice pull through the chimney and heats up pretty quick.  We have only used it on the charcoal grill so far, leak check and function check kind of thing.  It comes with a base for the little fire and a top ring to set a pot on for cooking.  (Why waste all that heat just for water?)

I would not be afraid to try that ghillie kettle.  It looks pretty stout.  I like the wood handle too.

Looks like a nice alternative to a jet boil. Thanks for sharing the link. Like the idea of not having to lug fuel around.

Jet boil is the cat's pajamas.  I love mine and take it to high power shoots so I can have coffee in the pits and hot lunch on the firing line.

The only thing that sucks is the TSA.  Last year I flew all over creation with that jet boil and NEVER had an incident.  This year they flagged my luggage and said it was prohibited in the checked bags.  Luckily I had gotten to the airport early enough to come out of the secure area, get the jet boil, put it in my car, and get back through security before my flight.  The same three TSA people at my very small, regional airport were confused why my boarding pass had already been marked as having me inside the secure area.............

I almost called my reserve center to cancel my orders I was so pissed.  (seems trivial, I know, but that equipment was an important part of my quality of life on this trip).  Can't wait for more airports to start recognizing that members of the US military are not terrorists (going through security twice is a PITA!).  Some major airports are starting to, but that is WAY off topic from this thread.....

There web site says that they are the makers off all of this style of kettle for the european companies.

http://ghilliekettleusa.bigcartel.com/product/ghillie-kettle-1-0-liter-explorer

"Ghillie Kettle 1.0 liter - Explorer
and pot support, cook kit, and triangular base stand

The 1.0 Litre Explorer, enough for 4 large cups, perfect family size.

Made In the U.K. by the same manufacturer that makes the other british kettles.
The difference is the Ghillie Kettle has a cap with a whistle, this makes them safer and more efficient."

They look almost like the Kelly Kettles. From what I have gleened from Ghillie, they are made of aluminum, which isn't bad, but I prefer Stainless. One nice touch on the Ghillie is the cover for the water chamber. How is the Kelly Kettle for boiling water? We got the 1.5L

Oh, and these things work within 5 minutes as advertised, however I am more advanced and use a blow torch to light my fire
