Just got set up with a generator interlock kit and with a storm coming I thought I'd test the system.

Coleman 14Kw generator with 20 HP honda engine

Got out the Gen and found the battery dead. Jumper cables to the rescue!

Still won't start

Checked oil level –– low and oil level interlock might be the culprit.

Add oil

Cranking really well, but no firing.

Check gas tank petcock –– it's open

The entire Genset has been sitting well over a year, could it be dead gas?

ANY suggestions GREATLY appreciated.Thanks

If you didn't have anything to stabilize your gas then yes your gas might be bad

Did you pull a plug and check for spark?

If you have spark you may need to pull the carbs off and give the orafices a good cleaning.  One year without running x small carbs with tiny idle circuits = varnish that blocks off the idle circuit of the carb.

The jet in the carb. is clogged from sitting without a stabilizer in gas.

there is a nut on the bottom of carb.  loosen it, but dont take it off. let gas drain for about 10 seconds into a cup.  tighten nut. fire up genny.

dont ever let any gas equipment sit for more than a month without using it and always turn off the fuel supply and let it run out of gas before you put it away.

Try starter fluid spray it in the carb

Don't forget to check the fuel filter, my MIL's was clogged inside the tank. To check remove the fuel line from the carb, and verify fuel is getting there.

I had a similar problem with a honda generator I let sit too long.

I emptied the tank, and drained the carb bowl and sprayed carb cleaner back up the bowl drain.  Let it soak, then refueled with fresh fuel and then she fired up.

I try not to let it go too long before running the generator.

this is most likely correct. its is true with any carburetor.. the pilot jet has a very small opening for fuel, and its the ONLY jet that allows ANY engine to operate from closed to 1/4 throttle.... so yes, starting and idling problems will usually lead to the pilot needing screwed out and poked out basically..  cans of spray  probably wont do it..  I keep a dentist pick that I straightened out in my tool box just for this... sometimes cutting torch/ welding tip cleaners work ( they bend easy if the gas is hardened in the jet though)

bought a gennie that had 4 y.o, gas........I hit the carb with spray cleaner.....nastyness came out......then a quick shot of either.....it fired and as it ran kept hitting it with bursts of carb cleaner.....it worked....good luck

Theoretical question:  if you get a partially varnish clogged carb running, will the flow of fresh gas eventually clean out the rest of the varnish?
Link Posted: 12/15/2010 4:47:15 PM EDT

The two things I have run into on my two gennys have been ethanol in gas gumming up the carb....twice, and on a new one the low oil shutoff was bad and we pulled the wire to get it to run again until we could get it replaced.  The first thing to do is check for a spark.  If you have a spark, then its fuel related.

pull the carb and take it to a parts store that sells small engine parts or a honda dealer. im betting its the needle valve. they use to be brass but carb makers got cheap and started using some other type of metal with a rubber tip. the ethanol in the fuel swells the rubber and it wont let gas pass through the carb. we ran into this summer before last with our brush truck at the FD.
