My thoughts: if you are planning for a SHTF scenario, either short or long, you're going to want to conserve fuel.  And part of that fuel is used for cooking.

Take beans.  If you have typical dried beans (pintos or whatnot), they're going to take a while to cook.  On the other hand, lentils take very little time.  

Is anyone else optimizing their food storage like this?
