GlockLuvinRedleg posted this in the .mil forum:

ok, this is more difficult to type than I thought it would be
So I'll do it quick and dirty

My son has some social development issues, there are 3 things that he likes in the world, dinosaurs, guns, and getting mail.

He will be turning 7 on the 4th of July, and my wife asked me to ask if anyone from arfcom could send him a birthday card. He gets so excited about getting mail that she actually mails him his birthday card.
He has expressed some concern that because we retired from the army, no one will send him any mail this year (we moved back to where the family is). Actually expressed some concern is an understatement, the kid is really worried.

I realize that this is probably very silly, but I would really appreciate it if any of ya'll could take the time to drop a card in the mail to him.
We're not asking for gifts or anything, just mail.

Either way, thanks for taking the time to consider it.

I PM'd him and asked if I could cross post it here in case anyone would like to send the boy a QSL card instead of/in addition to a birthday card since the kid loves getting mail.  I'll be sending him one of mine.

If interested, PM me for the name and address.

Thanks for posting here.  I rarely go into the .mil forum.  I don't have a lot in common with the youngsters.

I'm in.

Brundoggie went to the trouble to send me one of his beautiful and unique QSL cards, even though no actual contact,
it is the least I could do to take care of this request for him.

I IM'd you, let's do it!

Just so the folks would were nice enough to participate know, we started getting cards on Wednesday, we have a deal worked out with the mailman so that any cards he gets until next Friday are set aside for me and mom to intercept, and than starting the Monday after that we put them out and the mailman slips them into the currently delivered mail.

The mailman and I were in the same unit together I the late 90s so he's hooking us up

My wife and I greatly appreciate everyone who has been kind enough to send a card,

I grinned like the Cheshire cat the entire time I filled out the card.  Such a simple thing.

Thank you for your service.

May your son live a long life in happiness.

FWIW 99.9% of QSL cards are G-rated. Of the hundreds I have gotten I only recall 2 or 3 that were PG rated and only one that is R-rated.

I have one I am careful of who I send it to that lists my whereabouts as being BFE but I sent your boy a Camp Paeey leftover anyway because there are a couple of GIs in it.

Hunter opened his cards during dinner last night, mail call is becoming a very very big deal around here.

Normally Hunter does not like to read if he can avoid it, however my wife pointed out last night that he reads every card out loud, even though some of them are a struggle for him.

Because of the where he falls on the spectrum, he is extremely uncomfortable being the center of attention, or doing things in front of other people that he might "get wrong" he lives in perpetua fear of other people seeing him mess something up, like reading out loud, or performing. Team sports are a big challenge to, because he constantly worries that he is not doing something the right way, and and is always trying to ask questions to clarify what exactly it is that the coaches want.

We have turned this from just recieved get cards into a directed therapy type deal. He behaves during the day so he can get his mail. Once he gets his mail he proudly reads it out loud to everyone. With the contact cards he looks at the pictures and tries to tell a story about what he thinks is happening. After that he find where on the map the card came from and pins it.
All of this stuff is helping re-enforce slowing down, and paying attention.

The Legos that he got were doubly awesome, because it requires him to slow down, sort thing out' read direction and than execute a plan, with a prize at the end of some cool thing he can play with.

You guys are awesome, and some of the stuff is particularly touching, especially the notes of encouragement. It's really helping with his self esteem, and instead of telling us "Hunter bad" or "Hunter messed up" (he switches to third person when he is really upset) he is happier and proud that he has friends who send him mail for his birthday.

Here's last night mail:

LOCATIONS:

Arlington VA, (he really liked the dual minigun weilding Dino, and him and my wife thing your dog is cool)

Las Vegas NV, (he ran around the house opening the card scanning for deceptacons)

San Antonio TX, ( thanks for the personnel note, it made him feel pretty important)

USERNAMES:

Threefeathers, cute card, he thought that was really cool, he wanted to see the differences between your army era and mine, he said you guys looked like green army men)

Snackgunner, at this point I'm pretty sure there are no cards available for purchase within 25 miles of your house because you bought them all. Another card he liked.

Txsmiley, (you card turned into a lesson about morse code, and now apparently we have to build a rig from the house to the garage so he can send messages with the beeps)

CWG, really bro? We did frame it and gave it to him in the frame. (He wanted it put up in the playroom over his Lego table, he said that it "is the coolest painting ever" but is now researching his dinosaur books to see if a raptor could actually be capable of holding an American flag,,,,,,,other than that he had no problems with any of the other part. Apparently Ronald Reagan riding a velociraptor and firing a pdw offhand is completely good to go I his mind)

As soon as I get the picture uploaded I'll post it up

Alright, it's time for a card update

Sorry it took so long, life has a way of getting in the way, it's been a fairly hectic week, and has gotten more so with the impending birthday party on Saturday.

Here are the cards/packages that Hunter has recieved up to last night,
I had them sorted by day but some little hands decided that my neat stacks of envelopes with notes on them needed to be played with

If you don't see yours, and are certain that it was delivered it probably was, it's hard to keep boxes away from. 4 and 6 years old, since empty boxes are just as fun as new toys, also, some envelopes are apparently so cool that they get snagged and stashed somewehere

Without further ado,

Usernames (that I'm sure of)

Financeguy, he loves the Legos, and the caption America pin apparently has magic powers (that's what he says)

19suburban96, the farting unicorn,,,,,,I'm not sure that he will ever see a rainbow the same, he also said that that makes a lot more sense than water refraction causing rainbows (he really liked it)

tnc, Hunter wants you to know that trexs love parties and presents, but they don't hang out in deserts

Ranger-689, that was pretty cool, he made the jet out of the card and now it is doing strafing runs in the house

Make-mine-moxie, more patches sweet, and the rest of it was much appreciated too

Snackgunner, not even sure where to start, 6 more cards, all with something fun in them,,,,he likes than, he also says you have an awesome nickname

By location:

Restricted/OPSEC, that was probably the coolest thing he's gotten, he made me put it in the China cabinet until we can get a shadow box for it,,,,,for everyone wondering, Hunter recieved an American flag that was flown on a sortie conducted by the 494th fighter squadron "Mighty Black Panthers" in an F15E in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. He also got a unit coin, the certificate, a unit sticker, and the original paperwork proving the provenance of the action. Hunter asked me to get a good, solid, address for you so he can send you a letter and a picture of on his supercool stuff wall next to Ronald Reagan riding a velociraptor once we get it boxed. He would also like to include thank you notes to pass along to the pilot and wso.

United Kingdom, besides the contact cards, which he always wants to know the story behind the picture, he thinks the squadron stickers are way cool.

Richmond OH, Hunter said that anytime you have something laying around that wants to be mailed you can send it to him (I laughed)

Whiting ME, he said the card is cool because it's huge, he also got what was in it, and he says it's time to go shopping

Montavallo AL, the card has a goat on it, A GOAT, for some reason he thought that was hilarious, he also made us put it on the opposite side of the card wall from the dinosaur cards,,,,,,,his reason,,,,,,, so his cards would re-create the t-Rex scene from Jurassic park

Dawsonville GA, creepy grim reaper looking dude with an fal, that's a recipient for success. Hunter says that is an awesome picture, and wonders if your neighbors are afraid to go in the woods.

Marshalville GA, a card with a chicken, a card that sings, a card that performs the chicken dance! Not only did he think it was funny, but his sister (4) has added it to her rotation of cards that she goes to first thing when she wakes up and opens, she now dances to like 4 musical cards every morning.

Cameron NC, we have established he loves patches, the first thing he said was "look dad it's the big red one!, just like yours" you also managed to send one patch I wasn't familiar with, which is going some

Hope MillS NC, another big card, always popular, Always

University Place WA, the kids all loved the card, they think the dog is funny, he thought the patches were "awesome" and asked me again about getting a jacket to put them on,,,,,,,it's 85 degrees, just be patient son

Charlotte NC, dino card, can't be near the goat, just as popular as the big cards

Boston MA, first navy patch, that was a big Winamp a note, which he loves to read, he also asked if your college is as easy as mine,,,,I said not so much

Saudi Arabia, where's Waldo, he was excited about the card because I still have the books from when I was a kid, and he likes to search for the stuff in them

Fort Meyers FL, stickers,,,,,stickers,,,,,and more stickers! He also pointed out that now he has a bfl sticker just like the one on my truck. He also wanted to let you know that flock was a good choice

Saint Roberts MO, he jumped up and down screaming "a giant smiley face" than his sister took it, than he took it back, it's tacked up out of her reach because he likes it and she wants it

I think there may have been one or two others, but like I said, they steal the envelops and boxes
If anyone is concerned that something might not have made it just shoot me a message with specifics and I will check the card wall, or toy room

He's very very happy

That's the witchking of Angmar from Lord of the rings...he's holding the world's only 8mm FAL.

You can tell Hunter the neighbors have admitted they are afraid of me, but they say since I live there they are not afraid of anything else.

That's some awesome stuff, blessings to your clan, GLR!
