Hiya Guys.

Dicks sporting goods is offering Maverickk 88's in an 18.5" home defense version for $159.  It's no 870, Benelli or 590 but it may be hard  to argue with $159.  I am considering picking one up, more as a junker/handout/stash gun.  Again, the economics seem good.

Any experience with them?  I know they have a plastic trigger gaurd.  and the safety differs from a 500.  And its  a cheapo pinned fore-end.  But really, can I go wrong for $159???

oh, and a warning:  The website is www.dickssportinggoods.com.  Under no circumstances should you disengage the brain, and guess at the website like I mistakenly did.   The website is NOT www.dicks.com

How many shotguns do you have now? I have a 410 single, 20 gauge 870 youth, 12 gauge 870 express, and two 500 persuader 8 shot. For me, I really don't need another shotgun. If you don't have a shotgun at all and that's all the money you can spend on it, it's a ok gun. Or if you  just have one shotgun, the Maverik might be a good backup. I would suggest getting a higher quality gun eventually if this will be all you have. I don't think everyone needs a 590, but a good 500 or 870 is not a bad idea.

I took one through a tactical course (MDTS tactical shotgun1-2) and it worked flawlessly.
I would get it or 2...

I bought one years ago for cheap right after college. Not bad for the cost. I ended up selling it but it was ok.
Not the most customzable at the time but if memory serves me correctly, M-500 stocks fit cant say about any other add ons.

Planning on taking a road trip tomorrow with my buddy to grab a few. IF the bastards have them.

BTW I heard they are regularly $179 So I might just wait a week and pass on the urge to punch myself in the face for trying to shop on black friday

Don't have the 18.5" barrel version, but I've got a Maverick 88 & it's worked like a champ - birdsshot, buckshot, slugs. No jams & the Misses can handle it nicely. Need to get me a shorter barrel on it, though, as I'm no hunter.

Bass pro is doing the pander pump 18.5 for 150. Its a steel 870 clone from norinco with a heavy duty park finnish. I bought one years ago for the inlaws as cheap defense at the 200 regular price. Being that it takes all 870 parts and its steel id get one of these for 150 instead.

I have a Maverick.  It's a solid no frills pump gun.

I read the pander takes a special spacer to accept 870 barrels. Can anybody confirm either way?

Agreed.  I picked one up two years ago (or maybe last December?) for $149 and some change out of the door from Academy Sports.  It is my trunk gun.  No issues at all with it.

I'd buy the Mav88 for that, no question.

This is what I was told many moons ago when they first came out.

I've had my Model 88 for roughly 7 years now. It's a no nonsense pump shotgun. I've had nothing but good experience with mine. For $159 bucks, if you need another shotgun; it will serve you very well.
