If you could only have one piece of COMMS gear, what would it be and why?

I want to say my iPhone  But I know that'll be useless in a SHTF/TEOTWAWKI situation.  I definitely want to see what others have to say as I'm lacking in the COMMS department.

Assuming a cell phone and computer don't count, an Icom 7000...

FT-817 or something similar

Yaesu VX-8r and a shit-ton of different antennas.

Tough choice, probably an all-mode HF/VHF/UHF like an ICOM 7000 or Yaesu 857. Not hanheld, but would cover all the bases and function as a shortwave listener.

Or something like my VX7, which is software MARS/CAP capable and will tx on 70cm/1.25m/2m/6m in a handheld.

already have it.  local, national, and international capabilities in one box, along with alternative sources of power.

for more detail on this type of approach, see

Most folks would get so tangled up in all that they'd trip over their ERB and fall on their face and get shot.

I'd want a pair of capable handheld radios and the means to keep them running.

After a good means to 'purify' water.

And some other stuff.

That's where the Tactical Wheelbarrow or maybe a Tactical Dolly would come in handy.

Not that bad, you can scrounge for wifi with it, and if you have skype you can call people. During both Japan and Chile, the same day they had hot spots for people to use.
You should get a good shock proof case for it and means of recharging, I have the Otterbox defender and am happy with it so far. Dropped it several times, very hard on occasions, and the phone still works.

this right here. plus a decent shortwave receiver to listen to "the news."  i don't think i would have anyone to talk to outside of my immediate circle of companions.  its not like i would be calling in support or an air strike or anything.
