I am reading about people using inverters and gennys for backup power? How can I learn about this. I was going to get a gentec natural gas backup but I don't know how long we are staying in the house. I was reading post about people using golf cart batteries. I know nothing about this but I live in the midwest and we have been spared for a few years.

Arjedi has a series of loooooong posts he's collected over the years. I'd post them  here but I'm on my phone and don't have the links.  Read them all even though it takes a while there's a lot to take in through them all.

I'm sure he will be by shortly...

I've found a few of the best links.  Many of them are from various ARJedi posts.  I copied them without his permission so I hope he forgives me.  I take no credit for the writeups they are all excellent.

ETA....     here is a thread with a lot of info on building a small inverter backup. He did a great  job and made it neat and  very clean. Again this is a long thread but worth reading if you are looking to learn.

to make sure i am disconnected from the grid.
This is what i use to run power to the house for the fridge, freezer and hot water tank. I only run it couple hrs in the morning and evening.
The during the day i run

Then when it gets late I shut all gennys off then go with 2 deepcycle batteries and inverter to run fan on a propane stove fan and tv's.
Then get up next morning run big genny and cool everything off and recharge batteries.

You will need to figure out what you want to run and wattage that will be needed.
