The evening before, my son had expended almost all of his .25-06 ammo shooting pigs when we were supposed to be culling does. So, the next morning I sent him out with my AR and a magazine full of monarrch 55gr softpoints and told him to shoot some deer. He did !

Good cull.  The damn things, tasty and pretty as they are, are like vermin around here.

I've always wondered how soft points stack up against ball ammo whenever discussions of "stopping power" of the .223 round come up.  Since some people consider the .223 to be a marginal round when hunting deer, I'd like to know if anyone has bothered to do a side-by-side comparison.

See the tacked thread at the top of this board. Lots of discussion on that very subject. Generally, ball ammo is not suggested for hunting deer. you need something that expands. I've been pretty suprised at the effectiveness of .223 on game when using a good soft point. This year we used it on deer, pigs, and turkeys with good success, even with some lung shots on the pigs and deer.

I have killed 15 or so deer in the last two years with 223 it works fine.
