I also have a Z and sometimes will say "Zebra" and Zambesi" ETA: Ours is the only net I do regularly. However, the Maine Potato Net is a nice bunch of people. I happened across them just starting it up one day and they begin with the NC station reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, which indicated to me that at least they weren't a bunch of filthy commies. They start a bit early in the day for me to join very often. |

I might try "Zebra" and see if that works any better. "Zed" is nice and short but seems easier to get lost in the noise. "Zombie" is short enough and stands out. It's made a difference a couple of times. I often check into the Noontime Net on 7.283.5 (7.284 starting 2/1/22), which is quite active and starts early at 9:30 Pacific. The early check-ins often number over a hundred. It's almost like a DX pileup at times. They run on 3970 @ 11:30 PT also. |

You could use the DX alphabet and say Zanzibar. I use the DX version sometimes when trying to get into a pileup. It's more legit sounding that using something made up and you sound like DX.

I've used Zanzibar at times, also. Sometimes Zulu works, sometime nothing does. I try 'em all.

I didn’t tune to that, but went and finished cleaning up after dinner and then came back down to the underground lair for 80m. I thought it was just another bad night condition. I didn’t hear you this time. I did hear the fellow in Cape Cod,....not great but we could have had a conversation. I usually stick to the modern Alpha Bravo Charlie phonetics but can slip into Adam, Boy, Charles from the police radio habits. DXing if I am having to repeat phonetics several times I might use the DX code or sub in major city names in their country or region to get it to click for them. Sugar works better than Sierra. |

Not well enough to really understand and certainly not well enough to have a QSO, but I know your call so when Gyprat asks you how it's going and someone responds, I know it is you. |

I know.Epic proportions my ass. Hey! Fuck off! I'M the one telling the story!) Anyway the CA operator said "ending XX" as in ME. Just then the cat flicked my VFO and I found myself in the middle of ANOTHER pileup. Now I was kind of pissed off for a second and looked at the cat and said "The hell with it" and threw out my call and I'll be a rat bastard if he didn't pick me! I didn't have his call. I said "Wait a minute!" He said, "What do you need?" "I was trying to work a station in California and he had just picked up my call when my cat flicked his tail and moved my VFO and I landed on your pileup. I was annoyed and said to myself 'one pileup is as good as another' and threw out my call. I don't have your call." He gave me his call and said he was sending me a QSL card as soon as he went QRT....after he stopped laughing. And that's how I put Kawait in my logbook. I sent my card to him with $3 and an SAE. His card came too early. I knew he had sent it that day like he said he would. Know what he did with my SAE? He sent me a letter! |

I added a couple more to the log. The power line noise here has been crazy here recently, so it takes a good signal to get in here.

You had a great signal. Bumped down a bit when you cut the amp, but still good.
I had to QSY to 80m for a net. I announced on air but not sure that it was heard. |
