2012 ?

I thought I’d throw this out there and see what happens. 2012 in the supposed Mayan calendar date for the end of the world as we know it. And a few other past civilizations also have the predicted the exact date. I dismiss most of it except for the fact new information says that there actually be a planetary pole shift happening then. That means that Alaska would shift to the equator in a matter of hours to minutes. The only ones who would survive such an event are people like us who prepare and plan.
Anyone by any major coast would obviously be dead so planning to be somewhere else is essential. I plan on being on the highest KOA in Colorado about a week prior to Dec. 21 2012 just to be safe. With every single prep I have ever even dreamed of. But I see many with preps of a small food supply and weapons and ammo. All needed but if this comes true we will all need much more. Long term mad max planning will be a must. What’s left of society will be desperate and hungry, fuel will be gone quick, weapons and ammo/food will be the new gold. Has anyone been stocking up on non hybrid seeds? Hand wood working tools, axes, saws, chains, bow and arrows etc? How do we move and have livestock if we live in costal areas? Do you have a small boat or canoe travel ready? The idea of a small BOB in this situation seems funny if you think about it.
If NASA knew that this was going to happen you have to admit they wouldn’t tell us all until the last minute.
This might sound stupid but you can feel something is going to happen in our lifetime, will you be ready?

End of Calendar ≠ End of World

For instance, my calendar ends on December 31, 2008. If a few hundred Conquistadors invade my country and kill me before I get another one, that is the last calendar I will ever have.
Link Posted: 7/15/2008 5:46:40 PM EST

Oh the noes!!1! I just noticed that the calendar in my kitchen ends on 31 December 2008. This must mean that the world will end on that day!

Did you ever consider that maybe the Mayans would just "flip the page" and start a new cycle? This doesn't even take into account that their calendar was off by a few years and their grand cycle ended and began again in 1997. Also, their culture pretty much was destroyed several hundred years ago.

2012 doesn't really bother me that much. I'm more concerned with surviving 2008 and 2009 right now.

Amen brother. How many others in the past have taken the events of the day and said the world is ending? Chicken Little.

Well, my memory is failing me as I'm getting older, but as I recall from geology classes the poles switch about every 25,000 or 250,000 years. Alaska doesn't suddenly relocate to the equator or anything like that. Both poles have magnetic fields of which one is dominate, the dominance just switches. I don't think anyone has ever figured out why or even has a good theory. The interesting thing, though, is looking at rocks at different layers or geologic periods and see the grain of metallic particles all aligned to the dominant magnetic field similar to compass needles in the rock when it was formed, all pointing in the same direction.

No one can predict when the poles will shift. I suppose the odds of it happening within your lifetime might be 70 (life span) /25,000 — or 70/250,00 (Like I said, I forgot the number, but probably the larger of the two.).

meh.... I don't buy any of that end of calander crap, but setting a goal for self sufficiency by that year is not a bad idea. y2k motivated a lot of folks that were putting off preps so maybe 2012 will motivate some armchair survivalists.

There is no scientific assurance of anything. It APPEARS that the Earth, following its natural and predictable path through the galaxy, will cross some sort of imaginary "galactic equator" sometime in the next decade or so. AGAIN, its NOT SURPRISING that a culture that studied the stars extensively would be able to figure that out. this is basically just a hair-brained theory.

its THEORETICALLY possible that this COULD MAYBE have some sort of effect on the Earths magnetic field. maybe. Worst case (and highly unlikely) case scenario is that the Earths Magnetic poles could shift to new locations; most likely it wont be that bad.

It should also be noted that similar pole shifts have happened AS MANY AS 400 TIMES over the Earths history.

What other civilizations predicted the end at 2012? The Art Bellians?

I predict another Y2K style paranoia for this one. We can expect some real assholes to take advantage of this and jack the price up on supplies. So with the ongoing disasters and the approach of global hysteria about this event, you can count on the prices to climb drastically.

Pretty much pegged it.

Don't take my word for it, though. I just knew one of the guys that spent 1/2 his life dedicated to the interpretation of that stuff, and spent several years on the board in charge of it. I'm sure the moonbats know better.

Man I'm getting beat up from this one!hing Anyone remember the mammoth they found in Siberia frozen with food in it’s mouth? Well they know there was a mild climate at the time for some reason but in a flash they estimate of -150 degrees F the mammoth froze in place. Happened about 26,000 years ago. Again food for thought. A cycle…..looks like it.
It’s naïve of us great Humans to believe we have it all figured out and we are masters of all. In out 100 years of technology I’d say we don’t know squat.

It's probably nothing but there is a planetary alignment that has not happen in 26,000 years of so on that date. And as one poster said it has happened about 400 times that we know about. But no humans were alive to see it. The Mayan calendar is more accurate than our own and EVERY SINGLE planet movement and eclipse we see happening today was precisely predicted by them. And they did predict their own demise and the day the Spanish would show up. I don’t think it’s worth an argument but just food for thought.

Who said anything about the economy?

From what you've posted before, I'm at least as old as you are. My homes and cars are owned outright (so no payments there except for what I consider high property taxes). Since I pay them off every month I have a zero balance on all credit cards as of this morning. I have cash on hand, money in the bank, and investments that are at least not losing money right now. My income isn't exactly high, but unless Exxon/Mobil and the feds both stop paying their obligations I should be fine financially for the foreseeable future.

My issues are health related. And while my sky isn't falling, I can see some cracks.

All of the SA and Mex (Incas,Aztecs,Maya)Indians had some sort of prediction that ppl would come from the east to destroy them they thought it was the return of their god in a destroyer form. The Aztecs prolly got it the closest by predicting the year. This very mistake (Cortez for their god) led to their destruction. Be careful of predictions.

I saw this on the science channel also. Just think about it. If the entire crust of the earth decided to spin that far in a few hours, nobody would survive. If something happens that catastrophic you can just kiss your ass good by.

Do you think that you could find refuge at high elevation and avoid all the water sloshing around below you. Have you thought about the tremendous winds that you would incounter? It's not like the air would spin with the crust of the earth. It would probably mean 1000mph winds across the entire globe.

Better hold on tight and kiss your ass good by.

If I were you I would plane some sort of extended hot air ballon ride and watch it all happen from a considderable height. Or plan you're trip to the international space station asap.

ETA: Think of this senario like a giant tea cup ride. It's better to be the ride attendant than the rider.

I welcome more knee jerks with the 2012 preps. When I say "knee JERKS", I mean the scoffers and clowns that go around never prepared, then last second - swoop in and drive all the prices on gear up. They rarely have a clue what they are buying or how to use any of their survival equipment. Really they don't care to learn. They just buy for the sense of security. When Y2K came and went without a crash... plenty the knee jerks dumped all their NEW-EXPENSIVE gear, sometimes for pennies on the dollar. I made out like a bandit. Good times.

I can hire someone to write a progam that will make a million predictions a minute too.
Just because someone goes back (after the fact) and picks up the predictions does not a profit make.

Show me one profit cpu or otherwise that stops something bad from happening and then I may show a slight interest.

The truf hurts sometimes.

Steve - OP, I have a brother-in-law and his wife who are busy prepping for 2012 - farm, animals, etc. - they dig that stuff anyhow. I do not think the Mayans were right in the terms you have applied to it. That said, I do understand a person having the emotional fear that all is not well and they better do what they can....In Summer of 1998, I was listening to NPR radio --yeah, I know... and heard the discussioin about Y2K from the fellow who moved from NYC to New Mexico and all how the SHTF was, absolutely going to happen....I remembered my Dad's stories of the Depression and felt fear, got to obsessing about the "what ifs"... and started gathering stuff, even cool stuff - Y2k came and went and now i have stuff and worry about the current economy and so it goes..... it is good to prepare, just don't think you are going to be able to know exactly "what for" and "when".....just take sensible steps for you and your family and don't make too many tin foil hats.....it robs you of your sense of competence and THAT makes you more vulnerable and less able to respond appropriately. Take care.

The way I look at it is if it really is the end of the world, there is no point preparing for it. It will be the end, as in, NOTHING COMES NEXT. If it is not the end of the world, there is no point preparing for it because it is not the end.

In any case, I bet there are going to be a bunch of "end of the world" parties in 2012.
