Bushmaster had a serious no win situation here. I'm sure they understand that by settling, it means that a military style Firearms Company gave money to get a monkey off of it's back. This may be a positive thing in the sense that it probably avoided a long and very harsh media attention period aimed at Bushmaster and the Gun Industry as a whole (negative attention that the industry does not need more of). Bushmaster also may have looked at the fact that in a long drawn out civil court fight, they would probably lose even more money in legal fees than the agreed settlement amount, or worse, actually lose the entire case to a sympathetic (sheeple) jury.
So though I understand why Bushmaster would make this decision, it still goes back to it being a no win situation. This settlement has definitely set a major precedent that will end up hurting the Gun Industry in the near future.
And to think how close Bush and the majority of the Republican Party came to having these types of lawsuits halted.
It does piss me off that the blame by the media includes them saying such things like "why did Bushmaster continue selling these guys guns, since so many were stolen or missing from that particular dealer". First off, I don't believe there would have been any way of Bushmaster knowing that the business was having this problem. Secondly, Bushmaster followed all the legal requirements by selling to a licensed dealer, so they were doing their part. And thirdly, if this business was so irresponsible, why did the Government allow the business to continue doing business. Should they not have suspended their license for lack of reasonable security? Should there not have been a serious BATFE/FBI audit and investigation before deciding if the business should continue? Why blame the manufacturer that followed the Governments rules?
Sure, the Government fell asleep at the wheel on this one! Sure the gunshop was irresponsible and should have probably lost their Firearms License! Not that any of that would have prevented these scumbag criminals from getting their hands on a gun somewhere to do their sick crime with, but sure there were some mistakes made by the Government and the Gun Shop owner.
Should Bushmaster in any way be held responsible for this broken chain?......... NO!
They seem to be the only ones in this whole gun source chain that should receive no finger pointing. They made a legal product, sold it legally to a Federally licensed dealer, and that is where their trail ended. If the BATF was not on top of things with their Gun Shop audits, and if the Gun Shop was still legal and tender after so many guns had gone missing, then it's not Bushmasters fault that the shop was still legit in buying guns from Bushmaster.
Bushmaster did nothing wrong, but still ended up with the undeserved position of having to pick which end of the shaft they would take in. They had no choice of whether or not they would get shafted, only what end they would get shafted with! Talk about pure bullshit!
End of rant
