Just wanted to give a report on the PANTHER 308 I got from you guys. I am a little more than impressed to say the least!!!
I just got back from the range after sighting it in and shooting some groups.
First off though, I want to mention that I did infact take about an hour to lap the bore with JB Bore paste, then went through the 1 shot, clean, 1 shot, clean, etc. routine of course.
I did install a JP Enterprises single stage trigger that breaks at 4.0 pounds and is very crisp. I would like to note that unlike the Armalite AR10, I was able to use the yellow hammer spring with the speed hammer and had no problems with ignition. By the way I used some Military Ball Ammo.....don't even know where it was manufactured. I suspect I can get this trigger down to 3.0 -3.5 #......but not until I install the JP gas system and maybe lighten the bolt carrier.
I put an old 3.8-12X Simmons V-Tac scope on the rifle with high rings.....this is not an AO model but has a range finding reticle so I figure it is a good match for this rifle. (Took it off my soon to be gone FAL)
Anyways......I shot 10 shot groups.....not 3, not 5, but 10 shot groups off an eagle rest on a concrete bench (VERY STABLE!!). The distance was 100 yards.
I shot 5 (10 Shot groups).....the first group was 1.45" (which had a nasty flyer), followed by a 1.27" group, .86" group, 1.19" group and a .96" group. The average for the 5 groups was 1.146".....which for 10 shots, I would say is probably very impressive. And remember...this not using my hand loaded ammo, not commercial ammo....this is Military Ball Ammo.
I believe that with handloads I will acheive ½ to 3/4MOA with no problems.....I'll keep you posted on that.
So am I happy......YES I AM!!!.
The 2 mags that were included worked fine, fed properly and held the bolt open after the last round......just like they are supposed to. The only thing I did was lightly sand the outside of the mags so they would drop free from the rifle (about a 5 minute job per mag). Not sure if that is really necessary for the average shooter.....but I hope to use this rifle in 3 gun tactical matches in the 'HE-MAN' division so having drop free mags is a good thing for me. And hey.....I've done that on the mags for my SVI pistols too!!!
Next up for the rifle is to slot the Free Float tube, lighten the bolt carrier (maybe) and to shorten the barrel to 20", re-contour and install a comp and adjustable gas system.......did I mention I don't care about the warranty :) This gun works just fine and I suspect it will function great for years to come.
Now of course I don't recommend for anyone to just go about and do this stuff to their rifle.....if you don't know what you are doing it can be REAL dangerous (and even if you DO know what you are doing too!!) and also, it WILL void the warranty.....so think of this as a disclaimer.
I think you guys at DPMS came up with a winner here......good job!!!
