Hey guys, this was my first AR-15.com post over in the "Build It Yourself" section, but someone suggested I try it over here in the KAC industry section.
I'm making a parts list for a hard-use 5.56 SBR upper. I'm wondering if I could use a KAC sand-cutter bolt carrier (I've also seen them called "carbon-cutter" bolt carriers) with a non-KAC bolt and upper. Specifically, I'm thinking of building on a stripped Daniel Defense Mk 18 upper. Is this mix/match possible? Do KAC uppers have special channels or wider clearance for the sand-cutter teeth, or will the teeth fit in a DD upper? Can anyone with a KAC upper have a look in there for me?
Also, what about the cam pin and bolt dimensions? Is the sand-cutter bolt carrier long-term compatible with non-E3 bolts? I know non-E3 bolts are supposed to be "for emergency use only" in KAC uppers, but I'm assuming that has more to do with the lug/barrel-extension fit than with the bolt carrier. Am I on-target with that assumption? Has anyone tried this breed of frankengunning before?
