Same with the Hybrids, they are .40-.50 depending on if they are on sale or not. The RDF and ELD-m are quite a bit cheaper. I haven't tried the ELD-m yet but I have about 2500 of them.

It’s a very consistent performer at a reasonable price. I would ensure I fully documented those arses if they ever presented themselves! Thanks! I like shooting steel at range much better than punching holes in paper at 100! I also need to load/bring many, many more rounds! I had a similar experience using the JP SCS, just a lack of consistency. I don’t know if it was a change in dwell time, too fast an unlock, etc., etc., but the problem fixed itself when I went back to the red spring and H2. My 22” also did not like the Bergers, they were a 2MOA round on my initial hand loads whereas the Lapua 139 scenars performed much better. I posted pics previously and believe more work with the load would improve the group, but I’m also going to try a lighter 123gr bullet. Lastly, and I know you know this, but if anyone is thinking of changing their trigger with an AR-like trigger, please make sure it’s designed for the AR10 platform. The geometry of some triggers work well in an AR15, but when changed to an AR10 the trigger, upon reset, fails to fully engage the sear and rides forward causing a slam fire or an out of battery fire. Yes and it’s not a simple process. I’ve been reading a lot about gas port diameter, peak and port pressures, barrel and gas tube length, dwell time and the unlock cycle of an AR platform. It hurts your head, but you’re potentially dealing with 17 - 18,000PSI at the gas port and that needs to be tamed and timed so the rifle functions properly while delivering accuracy with a variety of loads. I’m seriously rethinking the heavier bullet thing. I won’t be firing the Prime or FGMM 142s in the gasser any longer. The Prime is loaded hot and best suited for my bolt gun as the pressures are at peak and you have higher pressures trying to move the heavier bullet. YMMV, but I’m going to stick with the 130 ELD-Ms and try a lighter 123gr bullet. Jim’s a good guy and active in the success of his product, just like someone else we know! Reloading is the bomb! Considering how much you still pay for components, the ELDs are a great deal. I haven’t and I believe I read somewhere that the 140s like a bolt but may not be the same in a gasser. I’ll see if I can find the thread, which I think was on the hide. You lose. I can’t help myself, I need to keep the thread going! I hope you can report back with your results. I went out Friday afternoon to test my Berger 130 AR Hybrid loads in 1x Hornady brass and my 140 Nosler CC loads that I made using necked-down .308 brass. My results were less than spectacular. The Berger loads were all over 1MOA, some getting close to 2MOA. Frustrated, I ran a few rounds of Hornady 130 ELD-M factory ammo through the gun, and it shot like garbage too. I was puzzled, because the Hornady ammo had consistently been 1/2" at 100 yards prior to that session. I pulled out a KAC SR-25 I had with me a put 3 rounds into .286" just to make sure that I didn't suddenly forget how to pull a trigger. Frustrated, I packed my stuff up and went home. At that point I had 209 rounds down the tube, so I took the gun apart and cleaned the barrel pretty thoroughly. While cleaning it I remembered that I had installed a H3 buffer in it since the last range session, so I am unsure if that had any impact in my huge loss of accuracy. With the gun shooting well over 1MOA at that point I was a little stressed out since I had a precision rifle match on Saturday morning at 07:30. I cleaned the gun, reinstalled the factory H2 buffer, and packed all my gear for the following day. I also packed a SR-25 in .308 just in case.... I arrived at the range at 06:00 in order to put a few rounds through the tube to see if cleaning it out and/or going back to the H2 buffer brought the rifle back in line with how it should be shooting. Sure enough, the rifle went back to putting the factory ELD-M into nice little 1/2MOA groups. I also shot another series of Berger loads, and they looked a lot better than they did the day before, but they still aren't where I want them. 42.9gr of Reloder 16 put me right at 2820fps with an SD of 10 and they hovered around 3/4". I'm hoping I can tighten that up just a tad once I play with seating depth. I shot the match with the LaRue, and I ended up taking 5th. I made a few mental mistakes and had one gear issue that kept me out of the top 3, which is what I was hoping for. The rifle shot well though, and I'm very excited to run it again next weekend at our yearly night PRS match. There are multiple advantages to running a gasser in PRS-type matches, and the LaRue .260 sure kicks the shit out of my .308 gas guns that I'm used to running. I'll be engaging targets out to 1700+ yards, so I'm really hoping I can nail down a load with the Berger 130 AR Hybrids, as they outperform every other 130-class bullet significantly out at distance. I did decide after shooting the match Saturday morning that I'll be ordering a TriggerTech "Adaptable" 2-stage trigger with the flat trigger shoe. I really like their triggers, and have them in both of my match bolt guns. Nothing against the LaRue trigger, but it's hard to run a 4.5lb trigger when you're used to shooting triggers in the 1.5-2lb range. No pictures from the weekend, my normal shooting/photography buddy didn't make it out to the range with me, but he should be out snapping photos and taking video next weekend. I'll update again later this week on how the Bergers are doing. I also loaded a set of ammo using IMR 4451, which I've had great success in using for my 6.5Creedmoor bolt gun. My 22” also did not like the Bergers, they were a 2MOA round on my initial hand loads whereas the Lapua 139 scenars performed much better. Go back a few pages and you can see the 140gr Barnes and the 139gr Lapuas just didn’t do too well (I understand I didn’t tweak the load to perfection). Also go back a page and look at the rounds I chambered that had contact with the lands. The COAL of the factory H130s is 2.793 and they’re contacting the rifling, which increases pressure. I don’t have the Ogive measurements with me, but I need to take that 2.793 and back it off 0.020 or so and see how the round performs and if I can note any differences in how the rifles feels during recoil/cycling. As a side note, in my reading this week I can't tell you how many people said on forums (to the effect), I jam them into the lands, I have to crunch the powder with the bullet, I load to speed, etc., etc. I can only hope I'm not on the range next to one of those idiots... I also think the sweet spot for my rifle is not in the 2900fps range but lower and in the 2750 – 2850 range. I’m going to tweak some loads and find the node that works. As others also load at their sweet spots, I think we’ll start to crack the code on what these 260s prefer. To hurt your head, here’s some of the reading for the week (in no particular order). There are tidbits in here, some real nuggets and some BS, proceed accordingly. Use a different BCG for suppressed? Suppressors affect on pressure. Suppressors affect on chamber pressure. Suppressor dip recipe. Pressure factors. Pressure Trace System Superformance in Gas Guns. Pressure curves in bolt and gas guns. Reading pressure signs. Hornady Ballistic Resources Berger COAL to Ogive Pt1. Berger Coal to Ogive Pt2. Calculating Barrel Pressure Quick Load 6.5CM gas port location. 6.5CM gas length. 260 action tuning. I think you maybe meant back the elds off the lands by .020 or .002? Not.200, that's a long ways |

Thanks for the added info D3, I'm partly glad that I'm still waiting on my .260 as I'm not planning on buying much commercially loaded ammo for it. This thread seems like a crash course in precision reloading though and I'm feeling like I lacking stuff on my reloading bench now (like a OAL chamber gauge and bullet comparator set among other things).
Coming from reloading for mostly bolt guns I have never thought about bullet weight vs barrel pressure, so thats something else for me to keep in mind now. |

View Quote Seriously, it's a learning journey for me and as we go along people can hop on and off at any time. We have some proven loads and some that need to be tweaked, and then there's me adding variables no-one would normally consider. Don't get drawn in unless you want to, but once you cross the threshold, you're all in. I'm going to play around with the load data I have (especially around 41.8grs of H4350), and when my copy of Quick Load arrives, play with the barrel timing/optimum charge weight theory. I'm also kicking around the idea of taking the factory Hornady and see if I can seat them 0.020 deeper so there's some jump to the lands, and see if there's any difference in performance. |

Can anyone suggest a ballistic calculator for an iPad? Something that I can punch in caliber, bullet weight, BC, MV, height of optic, etc....and save that particular load. Have it spit out holds in inches and MILs.
I'm willing to pay for it; I just don't want to pay for several apps to find the one that works best. |

I own the following apps on both iOS and Android:
AB Mobile (iOS/Android) AB Tactical (Android) Ballistics AE (iOS) StrelokPro (iOS) Shooter (iOS) BulletFlight (iOS) TRASOL (iOS) AB Mobile is by far the easiest to use and the most accurate one as well. AB Mobile is better on Android due to being able to purchase CDMs through the Google Play store. There is a BIG update coming later this summer for both iOS and Android versions that will make the bullet library "live" in the program, so bullet data gets updated in real-time as Litz and his crew test them. I run AB Mobile and AB Tactical when I'm shooting for score. The other programs I keep just to stay current with what my friends may be using should I need to help them troubleshoot an issue. Strelok has the largest database of reticles of any of the programs, so it is useful for plugging data into just to see how a bullet's flight path lines up on a BDC reticle w/o mil or MOA subtension info. |

The drill for this weekend is still TBD as the Quantico Ranges are open, but we still have not been "assigned" a range yet. I hope to stretch the LaRue to 1,000 with the factory ELD-Ms and on Sunday I'd like to go local to 100 with a 123gr bullet. I only have H4350 and Varget, so I need to see if I have a right powder for the 123s as I don't think there's a H4350 load for that lighter bullet. I may see if I can get out and find some RL-16 or 17 since there are loads for the 260.
Anyone using RL powders? I think Nihilsum may have posted he was using RL. |
