It might have changed but a few years back they changed it and limited all newbies to carrying three or four handguns all in 40 s&w.

The few I know carry Glocks and S&W's in .40 S&W. There is some older officers that uses revolvers still.

last iI knew HPD did not issue handguns. i knew old timers that still carried wheel guns. you will see HPD with any caliber from 9mm to .45  also sigs, s&w, glocks, hk and a few others a long time ago they would not let there officers carry taurus i don't know about now. word has it the new chef is looking into issuing side arms.

Before my dad retired he carried a Sig P220.  He recently passed it on to me as my patrol pistol when I passed the Academy.

A while ago I think it used to be no less than .38 for revolver and no less than 9mm for automatic.  My dad had them change the policy when he barrowed a desert eagle .50AE and tried to qualify with it.  At the time there was nothing in the policy against that.  heheht here is now

HPD does not issue weapons.  They do mandate what types of weapons, but I dont know what the current is nowadays

Why not the Springfield XD line 9, 40, 45, .357sig?

THe Sheriff's Dept back home just allowed them to chose from the XD's.

Probably no real reason. If the Officers don't ask or push for it to be added to the approved weapons/caliber list then it just doesn't get added. Most of the officers I know know very little, if anything, about firearms. They buy a Glock 17,19, or 22 for the academy and carry it on patrol when get there. Very few of them are knowledgeable about weapons and partake in it as a hobby.

There was an officer recently who was pushing to get the FN Five-Seven added. I haven't asked him recently if he was successful or not.
