Honestly, all my guys inside the AD are DAMN tightlipped right now. Have one, who is really good, and really connected, who still insists we're talking to Spurrier, but I just don't see him coming to Alabama even though he did NOT specifically deny Alabama in his statement today.

I'm hearing a few rumblings regarding Petrino, but personally think he's too expensive for what you get, Paul Johnson at Navy whom I really like, guy can coach his ASS off, he's won with nothing everywhere he's been,  and his teams play disciplined, and HARD, and Jim Grobe at Wake Forest, ditto the above. Anyone gets Wake into any championship game is a hell of a damn football coach.

I'd be thrilled with Johnson or Grobe, less so with PetrinHole.

Personally, I'm expecting BOHICA, Bama Nation: Another Clusterfucked coaching search from the U of A.

I do know this: Upon leaning that Shula was gone, Tommy Tuberville drank everything in his liquor cabinet.

Maybe something happened behind the scenes and maybe PB Jr pulled one of the strings he has attached to MM back and caused MM to do a spastic firing.

I could have sworn that South Carolina put somewhere in Spurrier's contract that he could not leave the contract for a South Eastern Conference team.  It was in the Sporting News a while back, due to the fears that he would bolt for Florida one day.

Wrong. Dead Wrong. Totally dead wrong.

Shula had everychance to save his job, and was either too ignorant or too stubborn to do it.

He has no one to blame but himself.

Had he grown a pair, done his job and managed the program, aside from friendships and favorites,  and proposed a real plan to correct the obvious problems with this team, he would've gotten AT LEAST another year.

As it was, he continually refused to acknowledge that there were huge discipline problems, huge gameday problems, insisted nothing was wrong and then proposed rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic as a remedy.

Anyone that's that fucking ignorant or stubborn isn't fit to be a head coach anywhere.

If I refused to listen to MY boss and then proposed do-nothing changes to fix the problem that's obvious to everyone but that I refuse to see, then I'd get fired, too, and with cause.

The U of A simply played the cards that Shula dealt them.

I like the guy, ALOT, but he was his own undoing.

Not anyone else.

Going against most other people's opinions, I would have to agree with you...........Shula basically told the AD and those associated that he would not fire anybody. There are discipline problems there......anyone see his players getting in his face? Shula make some dumb coaching decisions, and blundered through some games.......i.e. Duke and Hawaii. He is a nice guy, and I hated to see him fail, but he isnt head coach material.  
     As for an AD, I think Mal needs to retire and Bama hire Ozzie Newsome.........

They must have sent a company wide memo out as every morning on the ESPN stations, that's all they have said ad nauseaum. Valid points they made but to beat the horse to the extent  they do

It's because Bama fans are delusional. Bear has been dead for 24 years yet fans still wear houndstooth hats. TV stations go to Bear's grave during Iron Bowl week and fans are there worshipping Bear. News flash for you 'Bama fans:  You are not going to get Spurrier and you aren't going to get anywhere near Saban.  I'd offer my first born to get Saban back at LSU, but that's in the past.  Unless he completely self-destructs on the pro level, he's staying in Miami.  I kinda wish the Tide would get good again so LSU could at least have some competition (besides Auburn) in the SEC west.  I think LSU fans and Alabama fans equally despise Auburn!

It's good to be Despised!

I hope Bama gets a decent coach.  Doesn't have to be a BIG named guy, just someone that doesn't get fired within a couple or few years.

Tide targets Spurrier

TUSCALOOSA -- University of Alabama athletics director Mal Moore has requested permission to talk to South Carolina's Steve Spurrier about the Crimson Tide's head football coaching job, a source close to the search confirmed Wednesday night.

Spurrier is the top target for a position that could pay him $3 million annually, multiple sources told the Press-Register earlier Wednesday.

Sources confirmed that Spurrier has not received a formal offer and has not been officially contacted by UA officials.

Spurrier has spent the early part of this week recruiting in Florida and has given no indication that he would accept an offer. Spurrier, who was also recently pursued by the University of Miami, is expected to be back in Columbia, S.C., today for a pre-scheduled team meeting at 4 p.m. EST.

South Carolina apparently isn't sitting still in an effort to keep Spurrier happy. The (Columbia, S.C.) State reported Thursday that Spurrier and South Carolina officials are in negotiations regarding a restructured, more lucrative contract. Spurrier, in the second year of a seven-year deal, currently earns approximately $1.25 million annually. The State did not identify sources or specify any new dollar figures.

Spurrier also reiterated to The State that he intends to remain at South Carolina next season.

If Spurrier decides to stay in South Carolina, the Tide search could stretch into the holiday season, as UA officials have stressed their determination to be patient and find the right fit.

Here's a look at Spurrier and some other top candidates, why they might take the Alabama job, why they might not and the bottom line on their respective candidacies.

Steve Spurrier, head coach, South Carolina

-- Qualifications: Spurrier, 61, led the Gamecocks to their second consecutive winning season and seems to have South Carolina poised for SEC championship contention as early as next season. Spurrier won an Atlantic Coast Conference title at Duke, won six SEC titles and one national championship at Florida and has two years of NFL head-coaching experience with the Washington Redskins. He is widely considered the top offensive mind in the college game, has tremendous public/media relations skills and is revered and admired by his peers. He is not, however, considered a dynamic recruiter.

-- What it would cost: One way or another, it looks like Spurrier is going to get a raise. He also received a huge settlement from Redskins owner Daniel Snyder three seasons ago.

-- Why it makes sense: Competing in the SEC West might be a little easier than in the SEC East, where Florida, Tennessee and Georgia are perennial powers. Alabama may finally be to the point of giving a coach such as Spurrier complete autonomy over the program.

-- Why it doesn't: Spurrier is considered a man of his word, and he issued a statement earlier this week that he will be at South Carolina again next season. A standout recruiting class is on its way to Columbia, and South Carolina officials will give him anything he wants. Also, Spurrier's entire family has moved to Columbia, and his son is a walk-on quarterback on the Gamecocks' football team.

-- The Skinny: If every follower of this coaching search had a dollar for every Spurrier-to-Bama rumor, we could all retire and golf with the Ol' Ball Coach at Augusta National. A deep dig hasn't produced much substance to the rumor that Spurrier is amenable to leaving South Carolina. But crazier things have happened.

Nick Saban, head coach, Miami Dolphins

-- Qualifications: Saban, 55, led LSU to two SEC championships and the 2003 Bowl Championship Series title during his five-year stint at LSU. The former Michigan State coach and Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator left LSU for the Dolphins, where he is 14-13 through two seasons but is on a four-game winning streak. Saban is widely considered one of the top defensive minds in football and is known for his keen eye for details.

-- What it would cost: Plenty. Saban is in the second year of a five-year contract paying him close to $5 million per season. His buyout, according to one industry source, is "prohibitive."

-- Why it makes sense: Saban might be the best head coach in all of football. His hiring at Alabama would send shock waves and fear throughout the league. He's the ultimate program guy, and he might be the only person around who could shake Alabama out of its obsession with the past and bring the Tide completely into the modern era. He's also considered a fantastic recruiter, as a glance at LSU's current roster would attest.

-- Why it doesn't: Saban left a great college job at LSU for an NFL job where he was given complete autonomy over player personnel. It's difficult to believe that he'd walk away from that job -- and the money left on the contract -- to return to the college game. He said as much early this week.

-- The Skinny: Saban probably was/is Alabama's top choice, but the odds of pulling him away from the NFL seem incredibly long.

Rich Rodriguez, head coach, West Virginia

-- Qualifications: Rodriguez, 43, is an innovative offensive coach who has turned the Mountaineers into one of the nation's most explosive programs. Rodriguez targeted Daphne's Pat White, left him at quarterback and turned him into a Heisman Trophy candidate. The former Tulane and Clemson offensive coordinator has experience recruiting in the Southeast and has a dynamic personality.

-- What it would cost: Rodriguez signed a seven-year deal in June that pays him $1 million this season and $8.65 million over the life of the contract. Rodriguez has a $2 million buyout through Aug. 31, 2007.

-- Why it makes sense: Unlike Saban, Spurrier and Louisville's Bobby Petrino, Rodriguez seems to have a solid interest in the Crimson Tide opening. At Alabama, he'd be able to recruit more of the speed that fuels his offense as well as land the linebackers and defensive linemen that are required to compete for national titles. Getting those players in Morgantown, W.Va., can be problematic.

-- Why it doesn't: West Virginia is home. Rodriguez grew up the son of a coal miner, played at West Virginia and is revered in the Mountaineer State. Also, industry sources believe Rodriguez might be the leading candidate at Florida State if/when Bobby Bowden steps down, and it might not be the worst idea for Rodriguez to hang out with White and Steve Slaton, win a bunch of games and wait on the Seminoles.

-- The Skinny: Rodriguez to Alabama could happen. It makes a lot of sense for both sides, and West Virginia probably doesn't have the cash to compete with Alabama's potential offer.

Bobby Petrino, head coach, Louisville

-- Qualifications: The former Jacksonville Jaguars and Auburn offensive coordinator has turned Louisville into a national power in three seasons. He successfully recruited Michael Bush and Brian Brohm to Louisville and turned football into a headline story in a city known for its love of horse racing and basketball. The Cardinals are 10-1 heading into Saturday's game against Connecticut.

-- What it would cost: Petrino signed a 10-year, $25 million deal last year, but the buyout is only $1 million. Besides the much-publicized Jetgate scandal at Auburn in 2003, Petrino has been courted for several jobs around the country and is prominently mentioned as a potential candidate in the NFL. Keeping him in Tuscaloosa and away from the NFL would be the next chore.

-- Why it makes sense: If Alabama would truly like to make a move that would irk Auburn, it would hire Petrino. It would make the Iron Bowl a nasty rivalry. Also, Petrino could do damage with John Parker Wilson, DJ Hall and Keith Brown at his command.

-- Why it doesn't: Petrino isn't known as a great recruiter, so fighting the intense battles in the Southeast might not be to his liking. Further, given the situation he has at Louisville and the fact that he's already turned down one NFL job -- Petrino was courted by the Oakland Raiders in January -- there might not be a strong incentive to leave Louisville. In addition, Petrino is known to be a bit thin-skinned, so the glare of the Crimson Tide job might not suit him.

-- The Skinny: At least one industry source believes Petrino would indeed accept the Alabama job, and if the search gets past the Spurrier/Saban level, he could quickly emerge as a very strong candidate.

Paul Johnson, head coach, Navy

-- Qualifications: Johnson, 49, has a 98-34 career record and has guided Navy to four consecutive bowls. Johnson also coached Georgia Southern to back-to-back Division I-AA national championships in 1999 and 2000. Navy wraps up its regular season Saturday in Philadelphia against Army.

-- What it would cost: Johnson earns $1.003 million per season at Navy. However, the service academies are not known for participating in bidding wars for football coaches, so if it came down to money, Navy wouldn't be able to beat Alabama.

-- Why it makes sense: Johnson is a proven winner who has shown the ability to adapt to different athletes as well as handle jobs on opposite ends of the scale. Alabama fans would love his intensity, and one can't succeed at a service academy without the ability to handle time and outside demands efficiently.

-- Why it doesn't: After all of the talk in the state and among Alabama fans about Spurrier and Saban, it's hard to imagine a candidate such as Johnson getting much more than a lukewarm reception from the Crimson Nation. There's a good chance Johnson will be the next coach at North Carolina State, reminding Alabama fans that the prettiest girl doesn't always make the best wife. The Tide seems to be aiming higher this time around.

-- The Skinny: It doesn't seem likely, though coaches around the country rave about Johnson's ability to handle personnel and win games.

Jim Grobe, head coach, Wake Forest

-- Qualifications: Grobe, 54, was 26-32 entering this season at Wake Forest. However, the Demon Deacons will face Georgia Tech Saturday for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship. He deserves all of the credit, as Wake Forest was horrible before his arrival in Winston-Salem.

-- What it would cost: Grobe earns $988,000 per season, though he is likely in line for a raise after the Demon Deacons' standout season. Specific buyout terms of his contract are unknown.

-- Why it makes sense: Simply put, if a guy can win the ACC at Wake Forest, it figures the same guy could win the SEC at Alabama.

-- Why it doesn't: Grobe has put quite a bit of sweat equity into the Wake Forest program, redshirting almost all of his last three signing classes. ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach, who covered the ACC for the Washington Post before moving to ESPN, said Wake Forest should be even better next season.

-- The Skinny: Grobe isn't believed to be a very good fit for the bright spotlight at Alabama, and it's difficult to believe the Tide's search could get to this point.

Houston Nutt, head coach, Arkansas

-- Qualifications: Nutt, 49, is completing his 14th season as a head coach, including nine seasons at Arkansas. Including his stints at Murray State and Boise State, Nutt is 103-64. Nutt turned down a reported offer from Nebraska following the 2003 season and was a fringe candidate at LSU one year later. Interestingly, Nutt is 5-4 against Auburn during his tenure with the Hogs. He's guided his team to two SEC Championship Game appearances, including Saturday's matchup between his eighth-ranked Hogs and No. 4 Florida.

-- What it would cost: Nutt got a new contract after he turned down an overture from Nebraska following the 2003 season. The deal pays him approximately $1.05 million per season. The exact terms of his buyout are unknown, although insiders believe it is at least $1 million.

-- Why it makes sense: Nutt has been pretty successful at Arkansas, where geography presents a challenge in the SEC. He's a tremendous motivator, possesses endless energy and is a dynamic recruiter.

-- Why it doesn't: Arkansas returns Casey Dick, Mitch Mustain, Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, London Crawford, Ben Cleveland, Marcus Monk and Damien Williams next season, and that's just on the offensive side of the ball. Nutt is sensitive to criticism, and the Alabama job brings plenty of that even in a successful year.

-- The Skinny: On the surface, this makes no sense and seems highly unlikely. However, take note of two things: (1) When Saban left LSU, he recommended Nutt to athletic director Skip Bertman; (2) at least one source close to the Alabama search continues to maintain that Nutt is a serious candidate.
