can anyone recommend a reasonably priced police / fire / ems / emergency scanner?

i'm not sure what is reasonably priced (maybe $200-300?)... i'm asking here because i figure it's got a lot to do with local signal format.

Depends on what you want to listen to.  What county do you live in?  They UHF, VHF, Digital, Trunked?

radioreference Bergen County

that gives you all the details about radios being used in your area.

i would recommend the radioshack PRO-528 ( there may be a newer version as well) about 150 bucks.
