You mean it sends tickets to people that weren't speeding?

No its bogus because it is against state law yet the town is doing it anyway they mail you the ticket when the law say it must be given to you in person within 1 hour of being caught.

Pulled over. The had the patrol cars lined up on the on ramp. 6 were already pulled over when I  was pulled and I lost count how many were pulled while I was sitting there. Ridgeland is nothing more than a speed trap. The cop gave me city ordinance rather than a state. It was high $$$ and no points. Said it would not show up on my license or insurance. He was half truthful. My insurance has shot up another $70/month. Not to mention he disarmed me. Pointed my pistol at passing cars when he racked the round out.

Sad, but small towns all over SC are doing similar things to generate $$ simi-legally. Here in the upstate it's no better or maybe worse. No cameras as of yet but full time ticket writers instead.

This sort of thing is what makes people dislike cops.  They've found a way around state law that allows them to use the camera setup.  There has been a great deal of local contraversy over the issue but they won't back down.  They set the cameras up on the interstate and an officer runs the operation from a nearby "bread truck".  I'm sure its to generate more revenue because Ridgeland PD isn't very big.  Six donuts will feed the whole dept. And thats if the Chief eats two!

I wouldn't blame it on the cops... here in NC there's a "Governor's Highway Safety Program" and the cops here do what they need to do cause it's their job.

This program has been pushed along by the police chief.  So the cops are to blame in this situation..

So, are they writing tickets to people that aren't speeding? If not, then the whole thing should be pretty easy to avoid eh?

I got my ticket in the mail today. $133 for a town ordinance. 81 in a 70 zone. Says it will not ordinarily appear on your driving record. Has your picture of you in the car, a pic of the car,  the tag, and your dmv picture on the ticket.

I have done some research and the atty general and senators of SC are so mad at ridgeland for doing this that they passed a law to make speed cameras illegal. It was signed into law by the governor in June. The atty general says he hopes somebody sues the town and wins.

I guess the question is should I fight it with a $500 atty or just pay the fine and let them continue what they are doing?

And yes I wasnt paying attention to my speed and was prob doing what they caught me doing.

Forward your information to State Attorney General, and WLTX in Columbia.  IF it's illegal, the there should be a shit storm raised over this that will break the towns budget.

This- turnabout is fair play.  I'm sure with a little publicity you could probably get people who have been ticketed to contribute to attorney's fees to beat them.

Ever since I started driving the speed limit (or just slightly above) I haven't had a ticket.

As far as I'm concerned, the state/county/city can install all the cameras it wants... maybe it'll reduce the number of people driving 15+ mph over the posted speed limit and/or running red lights.  I'm amazed at the number of cars in a row that will run a red light in this state.

Columbia is REAL bad for this. I came from the Low Country about 20 years ago and I was shocked at the comparison to the running of red lights. But the problem is anyone doing over 1 mph can now get a ticket with cameras. Usually a PO won't waste time on someone dong 5 or maybe 9 over.  But with the cameras, it is an automated system that generates a lot of revenues where it would not in the past. I have NO problems with red light cams, even though I will admit I probably would have gotten a ticket in the mail a couple or three times, but none were intentional.
