Other than needing an individual pistol permit / registration form, are there any particularities to know about registering a stripped AR lower as a pistol in NJ? The guy at Brick Armory had never heard of such a thing.

I'm aware of the weight and features restrictions once I actually start the build.

Thanks

Fat chance of building a semi-auto pistol with an aluminum lower. You'd have to make it look like the below to get it under the 50 oz. limit.

This is an OA-98 by Olympic Arms. You're better off buying the Carbon 15 by Bushmaster.

I'll do the transfer as a pistol, but you should rethink it. IMO

Couldn't he transfer in a fixed-mag lower and forget the whole ordeal in making an AR pistol, since it wont detach?

Sure, if there was such a thing.

What about the FAB10? Plus, couldn't he just buy any old NJ-legal lower (pistol marked on paper of course), omit the mag release button, weld and pin a 15rnd mag into the well it prior to the building process and then build up his pistol?

My thought was to build a dedicated rimfire AR pistol. A .22 conversion in lieu of the heavy bolt/carrier, no buffer tube (and so no heavy buffer), and a short (4" or so) barrel turned down to minimum diameter (with no meat around the .223 chamber). The above plus a flat top upper will keep me under the weight limit, I hope.

Re the above fixed mag idea, does some NJ state tech branch entity need to specifically okay a fixed mag design? What about a nut welded onto the mag catch in place of the release button, preventing the mag from being removed with any tool short of a grinder? Or does it really have to be a solid magwell lower?

Maybe you should send a letter to NJ sate police first before going ahead with the lower.
Then post the results here, so others can follow the same procedure. What is the weight limit, 50oz.?

how will a .22 conversion work without a buffer tube, and can the buffer retainer pin be maintained without the buffer tub?

I can't find the weight limit in the NJ statutes.

I thought (and I might be very wrong) that the only weight limit was in the old federal AWB and we were now free to have 5 pound pistols if desired.

"desert eagle" > magazine is not outside pistol grip
"SW500" > revolver
Both not SAWs.

"mail from sales at bushmaster" > please email me the letter or post a copy here.
