Coming to the big island end of April, Hilo area.

Just want to catch fish, not looking for trophies. There will be 5 of us.  Never fished the ocean before.   Thanks in advance!

Your probably going to want to look at taking a charter out of honokohau harbor on the kona side- or something from kawaihae harbor.  The hilo harbor has probably 15 boats in it and its mostly local guys... not charters.

If you go to Honokohau, eat a cheeseburger at the Harbor House restaurant while you're there, you won't regret it.

Make plans to drive over to Honokohau Harbor-Kona side( 2 hour easy drive, one way).
1/2 to full day charters are available, many boats...Charter Desk
check here for what is available-largest listing of what is available on your date.
Many Captains have their "spots" and secrets of what the fish are biting on, at what depth, and time.

try to get on Capt. Bomboy Llanes boat! he just boated a 1041 pounder!

Kona Grander

Yes the schooners are awesome, burgers are too, so is the crab cake sandwich.
