Who would like to come along on a hog hunt next Tuesday, 12/27/2005, near Wills Point, Texas (between Terrell and Canton off I-20)?  My friends have been seeing herds/packs/whatever of 20+ hogs almost every night for the past few weeks, but they haven't shot any yet because they don't want to kill just 1 or 2 and then have the rest disappear.  They want as many hogs as possible picked off with suppressed weapons before we open up with everything else (machine guns, AR-15's, whatever you have).  They have set up a blind and shots can be as close as a Ruger 10/22, or up to 300 yards away, depending upon which way the hogs approach.  {caveat: I have not seen the actual blind or set-up yet, this is just what my friend has told me so far}
ETA: best part... no cost, they just want the hogs eradicated!  just make sure you have your hunting license and Form 4's or Form 1's for NFA toys

Any safe shooter/hunter is welcome to come, but space may be limited, and shooters with a suppressed rifle will have priority shots.  There are plenty of hogs, just bring a cooler / ice chest and your suppressed (if you have it) weapon.  Please PM me if you're interested.

This especially means you, TRG, because I know you have a suppressed rifle, and this is right in your back yard!  And you had asked me about it previously, so you better make it if you can.
TxLewis, are you in town?
Mojo?
Frisco?
usma89?
FALARAK?
Anyone?

 Thanks for the offer, hrt.

There will always be other hunts, so maybe you can make the next one.  I'll even do it on a Friday or a Sunday for you, so you can come too.

Do you mean 'next year' as in a week?  Or sometime later than that?  Are you out of the AO right now?

Do you need a license to hunt varmints?

In Texas, if you are hunting, you need a license.

TRG

According to the TP&W outdoor annual (2005-2006), you do not need a license to hunt depradating feral hogs.

They have to be depradating to take without license:

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/hunt/licenses/

A hunting license is not required to hunt the following:

  • Coyotes, if the coyotes are attacking, about to attack, or have recently attacked livestock, domestic animals, or fowl.

  • Depredating feral hogs, if a landowner (resident or non-resident) or landowner's agent or lessee is taking feral hogs causing depredation on the landowner's land.

  • Fur-bearing animals, if the hunter possesses a trapper's license or if the fur-bearing animals are causing depredation.

I do noticed they make changes from time to time. I thought at one time hogs were non-game animals.

Well guys (and girls), sorry we got skunked on the hog hunt.  I am by no means a hunter myself, but after talking to several others who are more experienced in hunting, and in hunting pigs in general, I have tips on things we could have done better.  We had a large number of folks for a small area (so any noise we made was just compounded), we didn't use any scent blockers, and we didn't have any good night vision or spotlights so we could stay after it got dark.  Next time will be better...

I'm game for the next hunt.  Most people from the area of Louisiana I'm from hunt pigs with dogs.
