Not to get mixed up with any other shotgun shell.

It's an industry attempt to differentiate different shotgun cartridges and prevent the incorrect gauge ammunition being used in a shotgun. The standard is yellow for 20 gauge, and red for 12, but I have no clue why they picked yellow for 20 or red for 12.

Some of the Winchester 12 ga AA shells are a dark gray color, most AA's are red, I don't know what the different color of the hull indicates.

as others have said, it was supposed to help prevent "barrel burst", IE dropping a 20 gauge round down the barrel, followed by the discharge of a 12 gauge shell.......

HMMM did you watch the same show as me last night

Aparently their were so many people droping 20ga rnds in a 12 then folowing it with a 12 and blowing up their guns that the ammo manufacturers came up with 20ga being yellow only......

I've got red green black 12's and have had blue and purple before. I know i've seen several diffrent colors of 410. I think 20 is the only rnd with a dedicated color.

Btw on the show they droped a 20 in a beneli (sp) folowed by a 12 slug and fired it then did it again with a 20 followed by 00 buck and it held up to it....... i wouldn't try it but i saw it on tv . The guys doing the show said they had seen lesser guns kersplode....
