Surplus ammo is available, but reloading can be a problem, there isn't any real source of once fired brass, and it's not easy to find virgin brass, and when you do...it's expensive.  I got some brass from Grafs, it carries a Grafs headstamp, I believe it's made by Privi Partizan, most use .311 bullets intended for 303 British.

I got 880 rd in 2 sealed cans for $104 with tax. it a great hard hiting round. Stack it deep I am just shooting a cheap m44. recoil is very mild I can get 203 grain barraul sp for $8.99 for 20 rds it a steal. look for a semi auto too

Remind me, and at the next shoot I'll bring my M38 or M91.  They shoot great and hit hard.  Ammo is the cheapest of al ammo right now.  The surplus stuff is $40 for a 440 round can, although it is corrosive.

Having shot a friends 91/30 and M44, they're cool rifles based on their history alone, but I found them to be fairly accurate guns.  The actions on all that I have handled have always been stiff, but I think that is the nature of the beast.  Hell, with cheap ammo, cheap rifles, and a chance to own another piece of history...I should really get my ass in gear and pick up a 91/30, M38, and an M44.  Is anyone selling these things without the horrible Century import mark on the receiver?  That dot matrix billboard is a deal breaker for me.

Well, I've heard it depends on whether you have on a maxi pad or a tampon as to how bad the recoil is!

I would say close to the same as a 30-06.

I was wanting something i could go shoot 400 rnds threw at a sitting...... i aint doing that with an 06 unless it's one heavy sob

have you ever fired off some of those hornaday heavy mag loads in your 444,

well it ain't nothing like those, the 220gr stuff has a bit of recoil, but nothing that'd cause your knees to nock or an uncontrolable flinch.

well you'll wanna start reloading them then, I bought myself an early birthday present today, I'll borrow a camera later and post pics,

but the 444 stuff I seen was $32+/20, the 45/70 stuff ranged from $29.50 to $32/20,

I ended up buying 50 pieces of brass for $26, dies/shell holder for $40 and 500 405grLFP bullets for $54, all plus tax of course,

the jacketed bullets were all $31/100, so I don't see my rifle shooting very many of those,

besides man, millions of buffalo and some indians were killed with lead bullets ranging in weight from 150 to 600grs,

I hear tell that winchester once loaded a 540gr LRN 45/70 load that would penatrate 37" of pine boards, so lead will do me just fine.

Did you get the cowboy model and ruin my possibility of a matched pair(atleast until they get another in)?

man, I ain't calling you a pussy..........................well at least not a big one............yet,

but I got a 308 load that'll chunck a 165gr btsp out of a 22 barrel at 2820 fps for a 20 shot avg, it kicks like mad out of my 7.5lb rifle,

but to tell the truth, the only difference I can tell between shooting an 06' and 308 is when I'm compairing shooting my 10 to a garand, my 10 kicks much less,

all bolt rifles chambered to either have the same appearent recoil to me,

as for the 400+ rounds in a setting, then I don't think there's a rifle chambered in anthing bigger than say a 250 savage or such that would fit the bill of "comfortable" for an extended range session,

your not gonna want to shoot the mosins for 400 rounds in one trip, at least not off a bench.

they got another, I looked at two of them, I bought the one with the best trigger pull, it's got prettier grain pattern in the stocks too,

I looked at the guide model too, had to have a reminder why I don't like them much, it was $130 cheaper,

but I went ahead and got the cowboy model since that's what I wanted, they all got that goofy safety bullshit on them,

shit it looks a lot better anyway, it's also a bit lighter even though it's got 4" more barrel and a full length tube mag,

I'll have to find one of the marbles tang sights, then it'll be complete.

I've always liked levers but the bug has been bad latley I've got about 6 on the want list.

I'll probably get the guide first and use it as a deer/pig rifle. The cowboy looks awful nice too, 6 rounds of 45-70 is nice.

Eagerly awaiting a range report.

IDK...... i can shoot the 308 all day long done it more than once ..... maybee i've just shot the 06's out of some light bolt rifles cause i don't care for them

Last time i bought 444 ammo it was 18.95 a box iirc and wallyworld still carried it ......... I bought a lot at one time cause brass for it was so high you might as well buy loaded ammo back then ............  think i still got a least 6 full boxes and 2-3 half full boxes in the truck's and camper i keep ammo scattered all over hell i think theirs still 900rnds of 22mag in my truck someplace

man, them cowboys were bad shots, so marlin made the cowboy model to hold nine rounds of 45/70.

I've never shot one with factory loaded ammo, the rifle I shot  had some reloads that kicked like mad, I don't know what grain they were, but they were hot.

I just figured hornaday's heavy mag load kicked the same.

nah Dan, those mexicans would be hiding behind bales of mexican agriculture and concrete slabs,

thinking more of beer cans and stampeding ferrets.

i HATE ak style gun but i get a hard on with this one.

HMMM now maybe thats the way i should go..... I'm guessing by deductive what i've shot recoil isn't bad in the romak??????

I could stack that stuff extremely deep at 40 for 400 rnds
