I picked up a couple boxes of Federal 165gr Hydra-Shok at $10 for a box of 20.

I'm going to run in through my pistol and see how it does. I need more practice with defensive loads.

Any opinions on Hydra Shoks? Big difference between the 165grains and the 230s? 1911 guys, what do you carry in your pistols daily?

I carry Hornady TAP 200gn +P

I picked up a bunch of different kinds of (defensive) ammo, and tried 'em all. I seemed to do well with the TAP round.

Prepare to get many opinions ...  before I give you mine let me say that most any .45 will put a nice hole in a bad guy and do its job.  What is better is a matter of taste to many ...

I did do a bunch of research and wasted way too much of my time looking into this and this is what "I" believe is the best ...  In order of my personal likes ...

Federal HST 185gr
Ranger SXT 230gr
Corbon DPX 185gr

My research shows +P and +p+ does not give a real noticeable plus in wound ballistics so I have given up on them ...

Those winchester rangers seem to be kinda difficult to get a hold of online.

midway carries gold dots.

but this was on that link SGB provided, "Speer Gold Dot: While the Gold Dot is a great performer, some do perform better than others. There have been reports of a failure to expand in the lighter bullet weights within a given caliber (155/165gr in .40, and 200gr in .45 for example), so keep that in mind."

Anyone have a source for rangers?

He did not have them last time I went looking.  Rangers are hard to get your hands on which is why I'm carying HSTs.  Well that combined with well known and documented expansion issues.  Ammunitiontogo.com is another good source.

Both are higher pressure rounds.

Sometimes more muzzle velocity and ft/lbs of energy.  Some firearms may not be designed to handle +p or +p+ rounds. I think barrel length also plays a big role in this as well.

Any .45 acp. is going to ruin a bad guys day. I want the peace of mind knowing that if I do have to use my .45 to defend my life, I am hitting the bad guy with the most I can hit him with, and I will be doing a two round tap center mass in doing so.

My preference is to carry Federal Premium .45 acp. 230 grain Hydra-Shok Jacketed Hollow Points in my Colt Combat Commander.

165 grains are good .... 230 grains are just better!!
