I just happened to be a member of the Cal Guard during the L.A. Riots and the Earthquakes...
It was a crazy time I remmember sitting on the couch watching the News and seeing Denny getting hit in the head with the cinder block live, I remmember going to the armory to draw gear, I was not supposed to have a weapon because I had not completed my training...( I ended up with a .45 anyway, and I was one of the very few that had ammo) I was in a support roll, and did not do much in the way of " Cracking skulls" or anything, but to be honest No one really did, The stuff you all saw on the news other than the arson was not that frequent after the 2nd day, most of the crazy stuff you saw on the the news was day one and two...after that lots of standing around watching the looters, The only shop owners I saw that were armed were the Koreans and I dont recall seeing one " Black Rifle" mostly 38 cal wheelguns and shotguns.. I remmember I was really tired and always busy, but as time went on it got quieter, and things started to settle down...the one thing that sticks out the most about what I learned in that situation was that there are groups of very greedy people that are willing to burn out and starve there own grandmother in order to get a free T.V. Very few were rioting because of what the court did, they were just scumbag motherf-er's that wanted to have a excuse to act stupid.
The Earthquake's were different, just after the quake everyone was very quiet and into helping each other ( shock) but as time went on it started to get very crazy, I remmember all of the free stuff the Red Cross was handing out. Food, Sleeping bags, Cots, Sleeping pads, 3 man dome tents you name it, it was there...about day 7 we started seeing a rash of thefts even if the stuff was free, these people from out of the area ( see group of scumbag people that would burn out their grandma) would show up and just start takeing the stuff from people when they wernt around....The one thing that really piss'd me off the most is the time I was just getting out of the shower at the south pct LAPD next to Conoga park ( that was where we had a large amount of troops set up) I remmember seeing a very tall Middle Eastern man in a very nice looking newer BMW, He was stealing foam sleeping pads right out of the back of the red cross tent, I went up to him and asked him what he was doing, and out pops his wife with bundles of blankets,( these bundles were about a dozen blankets to a package) the trunk was full of water, cases of candy bars and boxxes of transister radios/Flashlights. He acted like he did not speak a word of english put the pads in the backseat, his wife put the blankets in the back seat and off they left.( later on that day we ran the plate and they were not even from the area)...There was so much free food, and equipment avail for anyone who needed it, Yet the gangs of black kids ( crips/Bloods) and Mexican kids were so lazy they just started stealing from anyone they wanted to...Once again I saw very few Koreans that were around for help, they seem to have had their shit together...And for the most part the white people just got out of town...
I would rather go through 5 weeks of riots than 2 weeks of earthquakes.
I dont see L.A. style riots here in seattle from people from around here, It would have to be out of towners like WTO..., but I do see some crazy stuff in a disaster situation in fact I think people here could be worse because they are so used to having a pamper'd life, and they all of the sudden are going to be going through Starbuck's withdrawls....
