I have seen a lot of brands ranging from $79-300. This will be for my oll , flat top.

Some seem over-priced in comparison to the output with others at more than 1/2 the cost.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Id say you pay for what you get.  If you cant afford a a new EOTech, AimPoint or Trigicon then look fo ra used one...IMHO.

I found an older Aimpoint comp for less than $200 bucks.  bullet proof with a nice warranty and I can allways get my $$ out of it if I need the $$.

I have a few.  Eotech, OKO and Tasco Optima.

You know how much Eotechs are so I'll move on to the others.

The OKO is a well made red dot optic made in the Czech Republic. Costs about $175.00 new. I bought mine used here on the EE for $100.00. It has 11 brightness settings. Mine is a 4moa dot, they are also available with an 8moa dot. Great battery life, no automatic shutoff as far as I know. Holds zero and takes abuse pretty damn well. Exceeds my standards for quality, I am very happy with it.

The Tasco Optima 2000 is a micro red dot site. About the size of a matchbox. Tasco discontinued this model but it is now available as the Docter Optic sight and the J-Point. New, they are $175.00 on the EE, used are a little bit less. Online retail is over $200.00 for the J-point. Over $300.00 for the Docter, so the new ones on the EE right now are a great bargain IMHO. My optima is the 3.5moa dot version. The optima is also available in 7moa (I think). The J-point is available in 4moa and 8moa, the Docter is available in 3.5moa and 7moa.

Both of these sights are very well made and perform well. BUT it's just my opinion.

The Bushnell holosight is supposedly just a civilian version of the Eotech. Supposedly not as bulletproof or tough as the military spec Eotech. I don't know though as I do not have a Bushnell holosight.

One red dot sight that I do have that works fine on an AK is the Kobra. Russian made.  I have a first generation model. Adjustable reticles. It has held up well so far, about five years, but I do tend to baby my rifles and not get too tactical. They do make a version for flattop AR's but I have no experience with it. I have read some good and bad about Russian optics. Caveat emptor.

If you can afford it, get the Eotech. Second would be the OKO.

I have used the Bushnell Trophy (30mm) and the Tasco Pro Point (1") on other rifles. They work fine but just don't look quite right on an AR. I do like the adjustable reticles though. And they are inexpensive.

Someone at a retail store told me that for general purpose shooting and in home protection a TruGlo would be fine and much less expensive. I have not seen anyone comment on this brand. Any ideas on why or why not get a TruGlo????

Hey don't be so quick.

I have an ampoint and an EoTech and prefer the Eotech.  The main reason is I prefer the circle around the dot for quick target acquisition.  I'd try both before buying.

I use an OK Target (OKO) on a .50bmg conversion...
It's run great for a couple of years now, and even survived a fall from the bench and still maintained it's zero...

The TruGlo HUD seems to be running over $200 and they claim can be mounted on a .50.  I don't consider them less expensive when comparing to others.  I do like that they are manufactured in Richardson TX.  I might have to visit them some day, and hope they have an outlet store.

But, the Eo-Tech and Aimpoints are proven battle optics. Also, lifetime warranty's are GTG.

Turners has (2)TruGlo red dot for under $100.00. The MOA is 5 and 2.5 I think.

Since most of us civilian gun owners pamper our weapons rather than abuse them like the professionals do, I've never really worried about the relative ruggedness of red dot optics for civilians.

The biggest difference we have seen between cheap red dots and expensive ones is parallax.

You should be able to find a ton of good info on these in the optics/sights section on the AR15 board. It all will come down to what you like. Personally I don't like the EOtech but I love my Aimpoint. Both are great units and a lifetime warranty. You know Bushnell and Aimpoint have been around for years, so you know they will be there when you need them. Some of the cheaper brands might not be around in 5 years. Just somehting to think about should you need support.

Don't forget about the new version of the Trijicon Tri-power.  I like the red chevron.  Actually, it's always best to try before you buy.
