When I say Stetson, I mean a basic cowboy hat, be it Stetson, or Larry Mahan, Resistol etc.

But I was stuck for a theme for Halloween this year, but I think I have found a winner. I will be going as a Texan.
(I am about as far from a Texan as you could ever meet).

There is a Cavenders next door to Twin Peaks where the ARFCOM dinner is tonight so I am gonna go buy my hat tonight.

I have heard there is a color preference depending on if you work outdoors, or even if you are a Mexican or not.

Enlighten me.

Outdoors during the heat of the summer everyone wears straw or palm leaf.
Outdoors in the fall or winter to stay warm folks wear felt or fur felt.
A 100% beaver felt hat will run you $600.00. You can get a rabbit felt hat for $25.00.
Color of the felt...  Racist warning!!!
Mexican and city white people wear black hats.
West Texas white ranchers wear white/off white hats.
Brim shape is based on area. Floppy in east Texas to shade. High in west/north Texas to not catch the wind.

I suggest you get a straw hat.

straw in summer

felt in winter

color is your preference;

good guys wear white & bad guys wear black.

if the party is in texas, they will ask why you didn't dress up

Black or gray.

Personally, I like straw hats for down here.  If you get a cheap straw one, you can paint it day-glo orange or green.

hk940 - your interpretation of the felt color matches what I've been told.

So straw for Houston?

Cool, should be cheaper

A cheap hat will be dyed to color and the dye will wash out with rain.  The real deal is hand selected so its all one color and can get soaked and dry evenly. A cheap hat won't take abuse. A good hat won't tear under most abuse. They both will stain from tobacco juice, dirt and horse shit.
The $30.00 straw hat will last a long time and you can shoot, mow grass and even dunk it and it will cool you as it dries. Never leave any hat in a hot car as it will shrink.

Been looking at straw, they look shit.
Well, they do in black.

Will have to go play about tonight.

Might have to buy me a MASSIVE belt buckle too.

Since it's a costume.
You need western boots. 11" uppers and rubber soles will do. Square or pointed toe and moderate heel is fine.
Don't forget boot cut jeans sized 2" longer than your dress pant inseam.
Checkered or plaid shirt. If you can starch the shirt and the jeans with a "dress pant" crease all the better. Pint of real whiskey and a scarf for your back pocket and you are all set.

I already own several pairs of Tony Llama pointed toe boots.

I am intending to buy a 'retro' style shirt tonight as well.

Plus maybe even a Bolo

I intend for it not to even look like a costume until I open my mouth.

At which point my English teeth will surely give the game away

If you want to look authentic wear a white or blue long sleeve dress shirt and "simple" western belt.
Just trying to keep you from insulting anyone and getting your ass kicked for making fun of folks.

Actually, if I go buy a black felt hat I can go as Randy from the Trailer Park Boys

Yup, you are gonna get your ass kicked.

Darwin has been drinking

Well the second option is to go in my old British Army uniform, but I'll definitely get my ass kicked wearing that.

Not to mention the last time I fitted into it was 2001.

Straw in Spring/Summer
Felt in Fall/Winter
Black or a Chocolate Brown, depending on what colors you like to wear. I wear a hat every day. I have 2  black, 2 brown and white (4 church) and 2 straw.
