Where were you at when the Challenger exploded 20 yrs ago today?

Was manning a VCR in year 11 at Eltham , VIC (small town 20km nw of Melbourne) when it came across the news on the 7 Network. Since we didnt have good reception where I lived (30km one way to school and in the sticks), we didnt watch much tv. Well then again, really didnt get much time to. Working the station (Aussie ranch), schoolwork, g/f and other misc.

I was in the Little Falls, NJ middle school cafeteria watching the launch on TV.  The news came on last night and mentioned the anniversary, and watching it, I remembered like it was yesterday.

I was a senior in high school, and I had gone home for lunch, and saw it on TV.  When I went back to school and told everyone, no one believed me because we didn't have any televisions on in my High School.  When it finally became true to everyone, the halls were very somber that afternoon.  New Hampshire lost Christa McAuliffe that day, the first teacher in space.

In school. They called everyone into the library and cafeteria so we could all watch it in TV.
I have never seen the school so quiet and somber as it was that day. Only other thing that came close was the day Regan was shot and we all got called in to watch that as well. It still was not as somber tho.

Out of HS, before college.  I was working at the Gander Mountain warehouse on nights at the time.  I saw it live, at home.

I was at a meeting. Got home, and found a message on the machine from my mom..."The space shuttle blew up!". Man...I remember that message all right. Turned on the TV and watched.

I was really heartsick...I was (and still am) a big fan of the spaceprogram, and just knew what the backlash was gonna be...although I pissed at NASA when I found out they ignored the frozen rings warnings.

New York City
5th grade, Elementary school.
Had just done a huge science project on the space program the month before.
Principal of the school and my teacher took me to the side to tell me, then tried to explain what had happened to me.

2 days later I got into my first ever fight. Some jackass was teasing me with the 'What does NASA stand for?' joke.

Amazing how crass people can be isnt it?

BTW Wed is the 3rd anniversary of the Columbia breaking apart on reentry. Seen that one while doing pest control at WISC3 in Madison on their tv's around the station. Glad that was my last stop.
