As the subject says,

I have some dead sealed lead acid ones from various UPS and alarm systems, and a dead Black & Decker 12V battery from a drill.

NASA down in Clear Lake has some facility or program for recycling electronics.  I would guess that also includes batteries.  No specific details but I know they have it.

I've only seen the yearly drop-off thing they do for this sort of stuff. The last one was at Space Center Houston back in November.

On their website, Batteries Plus says that their stores will recycle 'em. There are 3 stores in Houston.
