Decide if you want Dallas area or Fort Worth first.
There's about 100 different cities in Dallas and Tarrant Counties, so narrow it down a bit and maybe I can help. However, if you want affordable acreage, you probably need to be looking on the Tarrent County side of the Metroplex. |

Weatherford and thereabouts is nice for the Ft Worth side of things. If you want to work in the Dallas area, you might be able to move somewhere in northern Collin County that is still semi-rural, or to the east of Dallas.
Now if you want to live on an acre in a city, well Plano's alright though it's about as close to what you're used to in CA as TX gets I think, lots of yuppies and soccer moms. Less liberal than CA, but still less conservative than most of TX. McKinney is getting that way but it's not so bad yet, Frisco is nice but it's kind of a 'little Plano'. That's pretty much just how it is in the suburbs these days though. |

Well, I am an ex CA. Living in Plano. Its like living in Orange County without the beach. I like it. But if you are looking for more rural. Try Weatherford west of Ft Worth. Or maybe further west like Mingus. Close enough to the city.

Your origonal idea of Alvarado is a good one also. Less expensive and open than a lot of other areas. I live in Arlington and drive there often to shoot at the range.

Urban Sprawl....
Frisco used to be "out in the 'docks" but its growing fast. The Colony used to be kinda upscale, but not so much any more... but its near Lake Lewisville. I know several folks up near Little Elm or Aubrey. These are north of Dallas. If you can handle the drive to Dallas for work, Canton and Royse City are nice. I'm more "urban" (actually suburban) in Carrollton. One of my criteria for buying a home was 'stay out of Dallas County'. I'm just north of the county line (in Denton county) and as a result, insurance and taxes are lower.... But, ANYWHERE in Texas is gonna be better than PRK (People's Republik of Kalifornia). Come on down! |

aaahhh now that you are married it will depend on where your wife works and wants to live. If she has to drive far then that will influence your decision. Definately stay out of Dallas county. I live in Rockwall right on a lake Ray Hubbord. So if you are used to water as I am its nice and better then all concrete ride and no sceenery. What type of work do you and your wife do, have you found any employers yet ? Just post here and you will get all kinds of replies. Good luck and welcome to the area. John |

Amen. That's the exact reason we moved to Carrollton and stayed in Denton County. You might look at Pilot Point or something in that area. Acreage, plus you're close to Frisco and McKinney. |

Texas has a variety of landscapes that you will need to consider. If you love the forest then I recommend East Texas (Google-Big Thicket NP). SE Texas it is an outdoorsman's paradise with rivers, creeks, lakes, and coastal salt water fishing. Abundant hunting opportunities and depending on what type of work you are into a half an hours drive will put you back at home in the privacy of the woods.
The area cities with employment potential in SE Texas that might interest you would be Lufkin/Nacogdoches, Beaumont, Houston, but there are many small towns that may interest you depending on what you want and/or do. If the DFW area stuff doesn't work out for whatever reason, look at Lubbock (or anywhere else in the Panhandle and South Plains areas).

It's gonna depend on where you end up working. Driving across DFW is a bitch.
We moved here about 6 months ago from Utah, love it, but am very thankful that I waited for a job on the Ft Worth side. We ended up buying a house in Azle, there are some nice places near here that are 1-5 acres that I'm sure would be very attractive price wise to someone coming from CA. |

I work in Saginaw just north of Fort Worth. We have subdivisions going up everywhere, most with this zero lot line bullshit.
If you want to stay west of Dallas- always a good idea, Wise county is a good choice. There are a lot of nice 5 and 10 acre lots IN Haslet, and a lot of friends have 20+ acres around Rhome and Decatur. Figure anything between Fort Worth and Dallas to be the suburbs, and traffic ain't getting better. The North Loop 820 around NRH is like LBJ was 10 years ago. Jim |

If I could live anywhere I wanted in Texas I would live in the FT Davis Mountains or somewhere just as remote.
If you have to work for a living, that limits you right there. Childress is nice if you can get by working as a prison guard.... I work in IT so I live near Houston. |

My fiancee is a school teacher, so we will move where ever she can get a job. I can do anything. I've been in the wholesale distribution industry for over 8 years, so I figure I can get a job in distribution.

If she gets her TX teaching cert, she will have a job pretty much anywhere she pleases, as Texas has a severe teaching shortage. Just be aware the pay is mediocre at best and the teachers retirement system sucks. (I'm sure she is aware of all this, so I'm done raining on the parade) I'm not really sure where there are GOOD teaching jobs available. In this area you have Tyler and Longview schools that probably pay the most, and depending on what she teaches, might have some students that aren't morons. However, the cost of living here is CHEAP, especially since you are from CA, and you could live out in the country on your land and not have a long drive into town. |

Pretty much the same out here in West Texas, too. Look into Lubbock. Do a Google search for "cost of living" and "adjustment" (maybe throw "MSN" into the mix, too; they've got one of the best free ones). Actually compare the CoL stuff of these different cities (won't be exact, but will give you an idea). |

Have her check into the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD. We have had a lot of new schools built recently including a new High School that is currently limited to freshmen and sophmores with the upper classes filling from the current student body.
In the Saginaw area we also have a lot of new warehouses- huge warehouses going up. Houses are priced pretty low, especially compared to dallas. In one developement they have 3 model homes with prices out front. A 1500 sq.ft. house for $102,000.00 sound good? We are close to everything but on the edge of the heavy traffic. Austin is little Cali not Plano. I lived out in Plano a few years back and its a very nice community. If I moved from Houston back to Dallas I would move to Plano or the Las Colinas areas.

The air quality in DFW area has become very bad over the last few years and the traffic is horrible. DFW area would not be my first pick.
The only reason we still live here is that I can't find a job like mine in another part of the state except Houston and I don't want to live in Houston. I prefer Austin or San Antonio. Both are closer to Gulf Coast and hunting in E. Texas if you like that. Austin is very laid back with lots of parks and a lot of really good resturants. Lots of fun stuff in San Antonio as well. Fredricksburg is very nice and is growing (west of Austin/San Antonio). If you want to be in the boonies, West Texas in nice (San Angelo) and East Texas is very pretty also (Lufkin). Just depends on if you like cactus or big trees. I'm a proud native Texan but I would also consider Arizona if I were looking for a state to relocate to. Very gun-friendly and lots of public land to play on. If I ever win the lotto i'm going to spend the winters in Scottsdale and go to Scottsdale gun club every day. Anyway... I'm hoping to retire close to the TX Gulf Coast or maybe Fredricksburg area. Still many years down the road however. By then I bet we'll have grandkids up here in DFW area and wife won't want to move. Go figure! Kudos to you for getting out of Cali. Be safe and welcome to Texas, Flyer |

I've actually given up on "placing" Lubbock, after being here eight years. It's a "transitional area" between the Panhandle and "West Texas". The "South Plains" gets used a lot, but folks actually tend to use 'em all interchangeably. Originally from the Corpus area. It's South Texas, but the folks from the [Rio Grande] Valley sometimes refer to themselves as South Texas. We're also "Gulf Coast," so it's a pretty dynamic, argumentative thing. Now that I think about it, perfect for Texas and Texans!

my 2 cents... Ft Worth is more conservative than Dallas as far as its politics go, although either will be FAR, FAR right of Kali. Ft Worth tends to be a cutoff point between the woodsy East texas and the more plains + scrub West Texas. If you want piney woods and green, lean East; if you don't mind a bit more arid, lean West.
I live in Tarrant county, very accessible to Ft. Worth and the mid cities, less so to Dallas. There is a serious amount of Defense Industry in Ft Worth, such as Lockheed Martin and Bell Helicopter. Ft. Worth is pro-military, God, guns, and apple pie. You will like this area! Acreage within easy driving to downtown will be pricey, but that's relative. You can buy 3200 square feet on an acre with trees in a nice suburb for $220K. Compared to Kali, well... it's cheap!Best of all, you can get all the goodies like machine guns and silencers. With real magazines. And pistol grips! Woo hoo! |

#1 there is a BIG difference between the traffic on the Dallas side and the Fort Worth side of the metromess. #2 Austin and San Antonio traffic is as bad or worse than DFW. #3 Austin is way to liberal |

Well not to hijack the thread, but here's the full scoop. Katrina hit. Company moved operations to Shreveport. Then Baton Rouge. Lived in hotels paid for by the company. Company started having turmoil. 2 of the traders that worked for me quit. Finanly got to see my apartment in Kenner and I had a few unexpected skylights. Lost about 40% of my stuff. With the company I am working for going to crap and the impending merger and change of management. I decided to leave and come back to Dallas in the interim. Went back to doing some consulting work. So I am here for at least 6mos. Unless I find something permanent sooner.

Bah....That's all relative. Traffic in Dallas is a piece of cake compared to CA. My folks live in a small town called Stockton, CA. They have worse traffic than Dallas. Air quality is nothing. Its cleaner compared to Los Angeles. I have yet to hear about a smog alert here in Dallas.

i live in grand prairie which is south west of dallas. i work near DFW airport and its only a 30 min drive (all side streets). Reason i love living in Grand Prairie / Arlington area is that everything is around you. I can get to dallas and fort worth in equal time. I am suprised no one has said anything about Mansfield. It is a growing area south of arlington. Joe pool lake is close too if you like water.
