What do you guys think bout this shotgun the Mossberg 500 Persuader as a cheap starter shotgun for me and the wife.

Fixed link here. IMO, go for the 870 at that price. I know Wal-Mart sells a 870 Synthetic for cheaper than that.

I've owned two shotguns: an Ithaca 37 featherweight & Mossberg 500. Only the Ithaca remains, and I can't imagine parting with it & I have no need to get another shotgun...unless it's another 37. The day I sold the Mossberg I was glad to see it go.

IMO the Mossberg was very cheaply built, and it just didn't have a solid feel to it. Also because it was so light, the recoil was sharper than the Ithaca. For a starter shotgun, I suppose a Moss is okay, but IMO it might be better to spend a little more $ and get a shotgun that you can not only learn on but keep for the long haul.

Not to tread upon anyone's favorite shotgun, but my 500 just didn't do it for me & I don't have much patience/sympathy for what I consider a poorly-made product.

Also, the Moss didn't have the sear disconnect that lets you hold down the trigger and pump and pump and pump.

I'd go with the Mossy. I have one that I've put MANY rounds through, bought it at Wally world almost ten years ago. I think it would be a GREAT starter gun for you guys. One of these years though I'll have a Benelli

Saw them for $239 at the Orlando show today. Really tempted to pick one up but wasnt what I was there for. If I lose too much sleep over it tonight I may just head back tomorrow
