Santa brought my son and I two new AR's for Christmas. Now we are trying to figure out what ammo to shoot, where to buy it, and how much is a fair price? We've read some posts which say that Wolf is good, while others say it's terrible. Some like Remington, others don't. And we've heard you can buy "cheap" 5.56 ammo, but can't seem to find where.

So, where do you get your ammo, what do you shoot, and what does it cost?

Cheap .223 is hard to find lately.

I usually watch Bimart ads and buy as much as I can whenever its on sale.

I think Bimarts usual prices are 4.59/20 rds of UMC and 4.99/20 rds of Federal AE. Usually goes down to about $4/box on sale. Of course when they DO have it on sale they never have it in stock, but they will give rainchecks. Watch for sales, go to Bimart, get a raincheck, come back when they have it in stock.

You can sometimes get decent prices at the Gunshow, but by the time you pay for parking and gas and pay to get in you're usually better off just buying at Bimart in the first place. If you do go to the gunshow remember to show your Bimart card, gets you $2 off the admission price.

I have shot Wolf and would do it again if the price was right..... good luck finding it though.

AE223 from GIJoes when it was 3.99/bx.
Guat mil. surplus M193 from gun show @ 180(??) a case
ADCOM M855 from SportsmansGuide. At the time 160 case
LC M855PD from Natches. At the time 160 case

All the prices above have gone up or out of stock. Buy it cheap, stack it deep and shoot a long time without resupply.

Were I you, get some AE233 when it goes on sale (3.99 bx) and buy a few cases or enough to last you until the next sale. Or just suck it up and buy it for 4.99 a bx at GIJOes or BiMart and buy enough to keep you shooting each time (however often it is).

Or do like I plan to do: ROLL YOUR OWN (reload)

I've been getting a (fair?) deal on .40 at Bi-sexual-Mart.
Bulk packs 250rds for $40something a box=about $180/k

They also have reasonable deals on 9mm UMC bulk packs-

Just have to watch the sales- seems like every other week ammo is on sale.

Haven't seen any reasonable .223 or .308 since I bought SA .308 for $220/case shipped and that Guat .223 for I can't remember/case- the Guat is great stuff.

I do the same with bi-mart.
When I have saved up enough pennies I go to www.outdoormarksman.com
to buy by the case. Wolf .223 is 165 right now. I usually pay between 12 and 20 for them to ship to me depending on how much handgun and shotgun ammo I throw on top of the order.

I'm still shooting South African 55 gr. surplus - $300/2700 rd. sealed tub. I'm glad I stocked up at the time.

I've shot thousands of rounds of Wolf and have never had a problem in any of my arfs. Get it at Outdoor Marksman in Salem.

Lots of Wolf, XM193, Fed AE, etc from OMC in Salem.

Then some Guat from AIM

I think mine with some of the pre-processed brass I've been using came to 16-18 cents a round. With brass I already own it would around 12 cents or so. 6 cents a bullet, 2 cents a primer, 4 cents for surplus powder. It shoots more accurately than XM193.

Last night I loaded over 300 rounds because TV was boring and I needed something productive to do. I figure labor to be free.

Interestingly, a Dillon with a case feeder can load 100 rounds in ten minutes.

So I soon had to go find something else to do with my time...So I loaded up some 9mm too.

How much does it cost you to load 9mm?

I have been laid up the last two weeks from knee surgery and loaded over 2k of 9mm. The price of ammo and reloading supplies has been going up daily. Cheap ammo looks like a thing of the past. The 9mm bullets I bought a month ago are up .02 each today I want to buy more primers and bullets, but can't find a good deal with anyone that has them in stock. You should be able to reload 9mm for under .10 each.

$33.88 UMC 250 round mega packs at Bi-mart, 9mm.

Do very many people buy ammo over the internet? I'm leary, to say the least.

I buy ammo all the time over the internet.

I'm a 'club member' at SG so I get that discount. Also, I always use one of their coupons for each order. If I need 5k of .223, I make 5 orders so that I take advantage of the coupon discount each time. It's $10 off an order of $99 or more- so I keep the orders as close to $99 as I can.

With the coupon and the 'club' discount, shipping ends up costing just a few $ more than the regular price.

Practically the only way I do buy it!

When buyammo.com had AE223 for $3.99/20 I bought 4000 rounds ($800-worth) Sometimes you have to fiddle with quantities for the shipping weight. Now it's $5.19/20, as is UMC223, so sometimes a Bi-Mart run is in order if they have it.

For my 9mm's I tend to use Winchester USA 115grain FMJ, although I then reload the cases with 147 Zero JHPs

For my bolt gun in .308, I only reload. Winchester Brass (or Lapua when I need something special), CCI primers, Vit N140 and Sierra 155's or 168's.

Personally, I won't put non-brass ammunition through my firearms, and I stay away from surplus or anything that is magnetic.

Let's see:

$52 1K 124gr HP from Berry's Bullets
$10 Winchester 231 Powder
$20 1K Winchester Small Pistol Primers

It's even cheaper if you use lead bullets but don't shoot them out of your Glock.
