Minister admits 24-hour licensing laws a failure in boozy Britain
Last updated at 12:49pm on 31st December 2006

The Labour party chairman conceded today that longer licensing hours have failed to break Britain's binge drinking habit.

Cabinet minister Hazel Blears said Britons enjoyed getting drunk too much to adopt a responsible continental-style drinking culture.

In an interview she said: "I don't know whether we'll ever get to be in a European drinking culture, where you go out and have a single glass of wine.

"Maybe it's our Anglo-Saxon mentality. We actually enjoy getting drunk. I think there is a bit about risk-taking - people want to push the limits of danger.

"So as a politician I don't think there are any easy answers," she told The Sunday Times.

Ms Blears is a former Home Office minister who had responsibility for tackling binge drinking. Round-the-clock opening for pubs and bars was introduced in November 2005.

No, that's like saying all Canadians, US citizens, Mexicans and further south are 'Americans'.

Anglo Saxons were pretty much an amalgamation of Germanic Tribes who invaded south and South East Britain and eventually settled with the native Celts. Undoubtedley an odd smattering of French as well.

Let's face it, the only way that we can put up with the continued mismanagement of the world is to remain in a constant drunken stupor...............................

The end is neigh.

You could argue it many ways. Personally I think being 'European' is a state of mind, to which I incidentally do not subscribe.

I always say:

Everyone should believe in something...  I believe I will have another drink.
