So let me get this straight.

When I buy a handgun, during the waiting period, do I have to get my CHL?

When getting a CHL, I have to attend classes and receive instruction from a licensed instructor, correct?

What topics does the instructor generally cover?

What are the requirements to pass instruction? Demonstrate marksmanship? Understanding of firearms terminology?

Thanks.

NO WAITING PEROIDthe only time you may have to wait to buy a gun if you dont have a CHL would be if NCIS places a hold on your background check. It happened to a friend of mine because he had the same name as a convicted felon, so they placed a hold until they could verify.

When getting a CHL, I have to attend classes and receive instruction from a licensed instructor, correct? Yes

What topics does the instructor generally cover?
Basic handgun safety and shooting, trespass laws, escalation of force, use of deadly force, prohibited places are just a few topics of the 10hr class.

What are the requirements to pass instruction? Demonstrate marksmanship? Understanding of firearms terminology?

set through 10hr class
pass a 50rnd course of fire. 3,7 & 15 yds I believe.
and a 50 question exam.

Thanks.

Mostly good answers.

I am a CHL instructor.  The state mandates what is taught in the class.  It has to be a minimum of 10 hours and a max of 15.

Topics are; Eligibility, Firearms Safety and Storage, Laws related to the carry of concealed handguns, Non-Violent Dispute resolution, Marksmanship, Use of Force laws. 50 question written test, 70% to pass.

In addition a shooting proficiency test is administered as already posted.  175 out of possible max of 250 to pass.

You can only qualify with a .32 caliber or larger.

Once you complete the class, you will submit the TR100 (proof of class completion) along with your application, fingerprints, photos and affidavits along with your fee to the state.  It takes, generally, 60 plus days to receive your license.
