Mark, I'm sort of glad to hear you say these things.
I hadn't bothered to voice my discontent concerning the NRA, because I assumed that being an NRA-Platinum club and all .... that folks would be hyper sensitive about it.

I think the NRA spends more mailing me solicitations than I give them in annual dues. Which makes me feel like sending them money is a waste.
Plus, I'm pretty sure that they sold my name all over the place.

NRA helped (on thier own terms) in the previous run-up to PPA.
I don't know what they did this last time around, 'cause I didn't get involved.

Jim Fendry has told me, while standing at less than arm's length, with a straight face that the NRA is ready to back a good CCW case all the way to WSC.
I told him that I could deliver a dozen cases tomorrow. What would you like? Men? Women? How old? What setting? Weapon preference?

He said that it couldn't be THAT WAY, and infered that WGO and the NRA could not be involved in orchestrating a case, but would surely swoop in to back a good/genuine case.
Fendry works pretty tirelessly.
When he says he'll send me something, it shows up.
When he tells me something, he backs it up.
In no way is this meant as a dig on Fendry, but I don't fucking believe it.

I get the feeling that the NRA is keeping an out available and will be a no-show with the excuse that something about the case isn't just right, so they can't affiliate with it.
They don't really act like they're lurking around waiting to leverage our position for us.
As mentioned in another thread here, WI has precedent-setting cases going to court with public defenders.
Where is your NRA now?
They filed a brief in Fisher.
Anybody with a demonstrable interest in the case can file a brief.
RCLRC can file a brief.
It's pretty much a no-show hand-waving cameo appearance, as opposed to the cavalry riding in and making you feel like someone's on your side.
I really get the feeling that they aren't interested in a judicial fight.
They'll just run in at the end for the celebration if you make it without them.

I could be wrong, the jury is still out.
If we do get a case that looks important CCW-wise, and the NRA sits on their thumbs, then they can fuck right off as far as I'm concerned.
I'll still hold my nose and do the annual postage-pre-pay on my  recycling material so that I can retain usage of the club, but it'll be under duress.

With all of that, I'm sorry that they're so stupid that they'd distance themselves from Ted, but I don't really give a fuck what they do at their convention.
I'm mildly interested to see what goes on there, but I fear that patronizing anything will only bring more mail.

Mark- you’re not wrong, however this is just the path the NRA has chosen to take over the years. Ted would/is be a great spokes person for gun owners; unfortunately many gun owners think he is a nut job.

Take a look at the membership at our own club. While there are those of use that believe in the true meaning of the 2nd amendment the majority turn their noses up at "non sporting" weapons.  I have heard members of the high power crowd say things like "why does anyone need an ak47 they have no legitimate purpose" You, yourself have referred the NFA members as the bastard children....and you are right we are. I've been questioned as to whether my weapons were legal to own, and why I "need something like that"....

Problems with the NRA

- They created a new classification for high power rifle in 2004 with the "f" class, and they finally allowed flat top rifles. But prohibited any type of rail system and only allow the factory hand guards. But it’s still ok to add that free float tube under the hand guards and 10 pounds of lead, and that match trigger....WTF.  What market were the aiming for with that, maybe those that are well past their prime but with pockets full of cash. You think we will ever see a M4 carbine classification anytime soon? 200 yard and under matches, engaging multiple targets? Probably not

-Lack of a grass roots Champaign ya they toot a big horn on how they do this, but from what I see its non excitant, and when you do see them it’s usually at places where the membership is already high like at gun shows. Here's an idea booths at state and county fairs, oh wait that might offend someone. Well planned parent hood does it.

-This last one is the biggy. They don't give a rip what we think or want. Military style weapons and the "action sports" is the fastest growing segment of the shooting industry but, the NRA as an organization is all but absent. Why because we let them do what they want, and don’t hold them accountable. They have let other organizations take over; on this level some manufacturers are more involved. Just think how many first time shooters try glock matches at their local range.  Who is the current spokes person for the NRA? I have no idea and I’m a life member. But I bet you know who is the celebrity for glock is… Another Kudo for Glock,  R. Lee Ermy as your company spokesman? Fucking brilliant a person both young and old want to see and listen to….Sort of like Ted. Only thing wrong with Ted being the national spokesperson is he has too much passion. If he couldn’t crank it up and down for different groups of people he would be a hit.

Mark yes they are our "big guns" but we need to figure out a way to help them better help us. They really are on auto pilot, and badgering the rank and file member for money all the time isnt helping. I wonder what thier response rate is to direct mail solicitation? Mine go right in the shit can unopened, I donate a set amount to them a year and more if i can afford it. I doubt im in the minority on that. Here is a fresh idea... Why not have NRA "fun shoots" like glock has set up. You can get some industry support for prizes, and have a NRA rep there to tell people whats going on and field questions. Good way to grow the membership ranks and fund raise at the same time.

There is a reason the Democrats were successful during the Pres. Cinton era, the same reason the Republican party has been successful the last 8 years... grass root campaigns. There really is no reason we dont have a PPA passed now, our constitutional ammendment granting us the right to bear arms passed with a hefty margin (70/30 if i recall). We are a state of gun owners and we let the minorty of socialists dictate our policy?   Where is the support network, Has anyone complied and managed an NRA Pro-Gun volunteer rooster for the state? I doubt it, because if they did they would have had bodies knocking on doors of the people on Stienbrinks district handing out flyers and talking to people about thier concerns.  I just feel they are ineffective on many issues, and our money is getting wasted. Its really pointless for me to say anything else, i know i'm preaching to the choir.

The NRA strides to be an elitist org. They will take the average gun owners dues and send out tons of horse shit letters trying to suck you dry. They don’t give a crap about the fact that the average Joe can relate to Ted. They are a corp. A business, BIG business, Just like GM and Ford. Their only support is for programs and publicity to make them look good to rich corporate types with big pockets. The programs they push and the money spend will never help out local ranges, clubs or anything like that. Its all black tie and champagne for the NRA.  SCREW THEM. I’m a proud FORMER NRA member!

I know they do dish out some money to the ranges. so i dont have a problem with that. The basic membership doen't put all that much money into thier coffers.

I would like to see Ted in concert at the NRA event. You haven't lived untill you have seen him live!

Mark, My (and AO's) membership was proffered specifically to comply with RCLRC's requirements.  I had given up my membership in 94 with the AWB, and the NRA's complicity in it.

At this point, I consider it a necessary evil simply because of the club.  Do we RKBA folks really want the organization that is supposed to be fighting for us to be the king-of-compromise-money-making-lobby-machine  that is the NRA?  Last year's annual meeting had one of our members make the suggestion that we send a message to the NRA due to their NGO status at the UN, the good folks at RCL should be opposed to it.

Let's face the facts:  The NRA is about duck hunting, and short of having a mass exodus (like 600 members taking a stand and refusing to renew), it isn't going to change.  Even then, I have serious doubts.  I quit bitching about the NRA long ago.  They are what they are, and they are not my friends.

I'm NOT the NRA.

They should have some type of, "I'm not sending you anymore money", box to check ---> they could save themselves lots of money.  I get at least three mailings a month from them looking for money.  That is at least $12 a year of postage they are playing of my $30 membership fee, and that doesn't even include the printing of the material.

I'm also only a member because the club requires it.

Most of their mailings are bulk rate so its hardly costing them to mail them/
