I have a project that a stainless lower receiver would help out with. Anybody know who has them?

I have no source for a stainless lower but what kinda toy would require the strength of a Stainless Steel lower?

Not so much the strength as the ease of alteration

You're pretty close...a bit of tig welding is definitely one of the steps in the alteration

DPMS used to have them but they've been discontinued. Sun Devil had them at one time, I think,  they may still make one for you. This company sells complete rifles with lowers but I didn't see just a lower on their web site. http://www.accuracysystemsinc.com/ar15_conversion.php

i am not a welder, but is there a reason that whatever you have in mind can't be done to an aluminum lower?  welding aluminum is pretty straightforward...

I weld aluminum too, but the only uniform refinish option is a coating (paint)...Stainless is much more flexible regarding finish options after welding

Yeah, anodizing across tig welds is  a PITA. All the heated/annealed areas of the weld won't take it worth a crap.
You can blacken stainless with certain oxidizers, and there is some success with aggressive bluing salts. Those are the only chemical conversion finishes I know of on SS (other than surface texturizing) that don't require some form of plating or PVD. Please explain, as you have piqued my interest.

These folks said they don't offer stainless anymore. They told me the ones they have now are nickel plated.

I will keep looking...I'm sure one will turn up somewhere

The answer to this is so obvious and simple I cannot believe no one has suggested it yet.  You just need to find a used Group Industries stainless steel lower.  This is the joking face =

There is a DPMS stainless lower for sale on GB.  The guy has it listed for $1899.95.
